Chapter 91 - The Siren’s Gambit: When the Warship Locked On, the Child Did Not Flinch

The cockpit of the battered VTOL rattled violently as the phased-array targeting locks screamed through every speaker. Outside, the North Atlantic was a churning sheet of black glass, carved open by the sharp bows of six phantom warships. Rain battered the windshield in ferocious sheets, but neither Dante nor Claire looked at the storm. Their eyes were locked on baby Leo.

The child sat upright in Claire’s lap. The infant’s usual fragile cries were gone, replaced by an eerie, tranquil calm. In the center of his pupils, twin rings of violet light flared with unnatural radiance, pulsing in rhythm with the electronic hum reverberating through the fuselage. Across from them, the second infant in his tactical harness began to mimic the rhythm, his tiny fingers twitching as if tapping into an invisible current.

"Claire, hold them down," Dante commanded, his voice tight as he drew his custom sidearm and chambered a round with practiced precision. "Miller, can we clear their firing arc?"

"Negative, boss!" Miller roared over the howl of the struggling turbines, his knuckles white on the stick. "Their point-defense lasers are tracking our heat signature. The second I pull pitch, they'll vaporize our tail assembly. And that voice on the open band—Claire, that was your voice."

"It's not me," Claire whispered, her jaw tightening as she pressed a trembling hand against Leo’s chest. The child’s skin burned with feverish heat, yet his pulse was rock steady—exactly sixty beats per minute, synchronizing directly with the radar sweep of the lead vessel below. "She’s the shadow project. The duplicate they engineered to inherit the syndicate’s master frequency."

The cabin radio crackled again, cutting through the whine of the engines with crystalline clarity.

"Don't flatter yourself, sister," the voice murmured, smooth and dripping with poisonous familiarity. "You were the rough draft. The sentimental fool who fell in love with a Moretti. Did you honestly believe our grandfather would leave the ultimate failsafe in the hands of a runaway? Descend to Deck Alpha of the flagship *Tartarus*. If you attempt to veer off course by even half a degree, our kinetic batteries will shred that transport before your babies can take another breath."

Dante stepped forward, bracing one hand against the pilot's bulkhead and leaning toward the transceiver. His eyes were cold flint. "You touch a hair on my family's heads, and I will burn the entire Moretti network to the waterline. You'll inherit nothing but ash and bone."

A low, chilling laugh echoed through the cabin. "Oh, Dante. Look below you. We don't need your permission. The boy is already coming home."

Outside, the lead frigate’s primary deck began to split open, revealing a submerged landing bay bathed in crimson emergency strobes. At that exact moment, baby Leo let out a sharp, resonant giggle—and the transport’s flight controls locked dead in Miller's hands.
