Chapter 57 - Blood in the Potomac Fog: The Silent Armada Surrounding the Crippled Submarine

Dante raised the flare gun through the shattered skylight of the warehouse and fired.

A blazing crimson magnesium flare screamed three hundred feet into the pitch-black sky above the East River, bursting into a brilliant umbrella of blood-red fire that illuminated the dead city below.

For thirty seconds, there was only silence.

Then, from the dark waters of the harbor, from the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge, and from the narrow cobblestone alleyways of DUMBO, engines began to roar.

They weren't military aircraft. They were hundreds of high-powered, analog muscle cars, armored black SUVs, speedboats, and tugboats—all pre-digital machinery kept in Dante Moretti’s private underground reserves for the event of a foreign invasion or government collapse.

Heavy diesel spotlights mounted on vintage cigarette boats swept across the river, locking onto the crash site of the downed Syndicate helicopter.

Dozens of armed men in dark tactical trench coats, wearing white silk armbands marked with the Moretti family crest, poured over the perimeter fences of the Navy Yard.

At the head of the convoy, an armored 1985 Mercedes G-Wagon skidded to a halt in front of the munitions bunker. The door flew open, and Marco, Dante’s most trusted underboss, stepped out into the rain, a pair of vintage Uzis strapped across his chest.

"Don Dante!" Marco yelled, rushing forward with two bodyguards carrying heavy ballistic shields. "The whole city is dark! Wall Street is rioting, the bridges are barricaded, and our listening posts say every mercenary unit on the East Coast just received a fifty-million-dollar bounty on your head!"

"Let them collect it in hell," Dante commanded, stepping out of the shadows. He carefully shielded Claire and Leo behind his broad shoulders. "Get the armored transport ready. We move to the Long Island compound immediately."

"We can't take the highways, Boss," Marco said grimly, handing Dante a loaded combat shotgun. "A convoy of unmarked military trucks just sealed the Midtown Tunnel. They have heavy machine guns and military-grade body armor. They’re executing anyone who tries to cross."

"Then we don't cross by land," Claire said, stepping forward.

Marco stopped, his eyes widening as he looked at Claire’s tactical uniform, the blood on her face, and the military bearing in her posture. This was not the gentle nanny he had investigated two weeks ago.

"Who the hell is she, Boss?" Marco asked, hand drifting near his sidearm.

"She is the mother of the Moretti heir," Dante said, his voice leaving no room for debate. "And if anyone in this family questions her word, they answer to me."

Marco swallowed hard, bowing his head in immediate submission. "Understood, Don Dante."

"We use the old rum-runner tunnels," Claire instructed, pointing toward the flooded dry dock wall where a series of bricked-up arches lay beneath the water line. "Before this yard was decommissioned during the Cold War, the Navy built an underground canal system connecting the harbor directly to the underground vaults of the Federal Reserve and the Lower East Side rail yards. If the tide is out, the clearance is high enough for speedboats."

Dante looked at her, a faint, dangerous smirk touching his lips. "You really were planning an escape route from the day you arrived, weren't you?"

"I was planning for the day they found us," Claire corrected softly. "And that day is today."

Suddenly, a loud, synthetic acoustic screech echoed from the harbor waters.

The river itself seemed to boil. Rising from the black depths of the Hudson, less than two hundred yards away, the conning towers of two more unidentified submersibles breached the surface, their deck-mounted autocannons already pivoting toward the warehouse.
