Chapter 12 - The Ghost Credential

The rain was falling heavily against the high windows of Claire’s new office in the Joint Chiefs wing.

She sat at her desk, surrounded by four encrypted monitors displaying complex node maps of the Atlantic naval supply grid.

Beside her keyboard lay a physical manila folder containing the service records of the late Vice Admiral Thomas Ellison.

Thomas Ellison had been a respected flag officer in his day, but his later years had been marked by reckless private investments and bitter political feuds.

When he died, he left Margaret a massive suburban house, a high social standing, and a mountain of hidden debt.

Claire pulled up the audit trail for Thomas’s legacy naval pension and security clearances.

The file showed something alarming.

The access codes hadn't been reactivated from the outside by a hacker.

They had been renewed six months ago from within the Department of the Navy's administrative portal.

The person who approved the credential extension had used a low-level clerical clearance code.

It was a clearance code that used to belong to Claire's old administrative office in Norfolk.

Claire’s fingers froze over the keyboard.

Someone had used her old department’s routing keys to sign off on the dead Admiral’s access renewal right before she was transferred to the Pentagon.

It was an intricate, dirty setup.

If the breach was investigated by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), the paper trail would point straight back to her old command desk.

It was designed to look like Captain Claire Ellison had improperly cleared her own late father-in-law's credentials.

Claire leaned back in her leather executive chair, taking a slow, steady breath.

This was not a petty mother-in-law public stunt anymore.

This was a calculated, deliberate frame job aimed at destroying her military career and compromising naval intelligence.

Her secure desk phone rang.

It was Rear Admiral Henderson calling from Norfolk.

"Claire," Henderson’s voice was heavy with dark humor.

"We have a situation down here."

"NCIS just flagged a credential anomaly linked to your former Norfolk logistics office."

"I know, Admiral," Claire said smoothly.

"I'm staring at the telemetry right now."

"They're going to send an investigative team up to your Pentagon office by tomorrow morning, Claire," Henderson warned.

"Someone manipulated the administrative logs before you departed Norfolk."

"Who knew your office administrative access codes back then?"

Claire thought back to her seven years in Norfolk.

She had kept her military life strictly separate from her domestic life.

Except for one thing.

She had occasionally worked from her home office on secure laptop terminals when managing gala logistics and routine administrative scheduling.

And Margaret Ellison had stayed in that house for weeks at a time.

Owen had spent hours sitting in that study while Claire was at the base.

"Admiral," Claire said, her voice dropping into a cold, dangerous register.

"I need an emergency warrant to audit the private financial records of Margaret Ellison and her late husband's estate."

"You think Margaret is behind a cyber breach?" Henderson sounded skeptical.

"The woman couldn't even distinguish a Captain from a secretary."

"She couldn't execute a cyber breach on her own," Claire agreed.

"But she knows people who can."

"And she owes millions to contractors who would pay anything for naval logistics routes."

"I'm coming down to Virginia tonight, Admiral."

"I'm going to find out who gave her the key."
