Chapter 70 - The Final Transmit: The Nursery Door Slid Open, and a Voice Said, "Hello, Sister

"DANTE!" Claire’s scream tore through the sound of the wind and the rushing tides.

The billionaire didn't fall. He was tied to the conning tower rail with a heavy nylon mooring line, his hands gripping the controls of a dual-mounted heavy anti-aircraft machine gun. His face was a mask of dried blood and absolute, unadulterated fury. Behind him on the conning tower, Marco was frantically working the manual ballast valves to keep the crippled submarine from foundering beneath the waves.

Dante didn't wait for the automated defense grid.

He pulled the dual charging handles of the heavy gun, leveled the twin barrels at the hovering command aircraft, and pulled the triggers.

*THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD-THUD!*

The massive fifty-caliber armor-piercing incendiary rounds ripped through the rotor mast of Valeria’s helicopter. The blades sheared off in a catastrophic explosion of titanium and fire, sending the crippled gunship spiraling out of control toward the rocky shores of Staten Island, where it vanished behind the tree line in a massive, rolling fireball of black smoke and orange flame.

"Valeria!" Claire gasped, her knuckles tightening around the baby.

The remaining automated cutters in the bay, recognizing the death of the command unit, powered down their radar arrays and slipped into standby mode, their lights blinking from red back to neutral green.

Silence fell over New York Harbor.

The rain finally stopped, giving way to the cold, pale light of dawn breaking over the Atlantic horizon.

Dante’s submarine pulled alongside Claire’s interceptor boat, the rusted hulls grinding together with a groaning screech of rubber fenders. Two bruised and bleeding Moretti enforcers dropped a gangway between the vessels.

Claire scrambled across, holding Leo fiercely against her chest.

Dante untied himself from the railing, collapsing onto his knees on the steel deck. Claire caught him before his face could hit the iron, pulling him against her body, her tears falling hot and fast onto his bloody shoulder.

"You're alive..." she sobbed, burying her face against his neck. "You came back..."

"I told you..." Dante whispered, his voice broken, his trembling hands wrapping around both Claire and his son, pulling them into an embrace so tight it felt as though he were trying to weld their three bodies into one single, unbreakable soul. "I would burn the world... before I let them take you."

Leo reached out his tiny, soft hand, his small fingers pressing against his father’s bruised, bloody cheek. Dante closed his eyes, a single, clean tear carving a path through the grime of his face as he kissed his son's forehead.

"It's over," Marco said, leaning against the hatch, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "The Directorate's command structure in New York is wiped out. Bernardo is dead. Valeria's ship is at the bottom of the river. We won, Boss. We won."

Four hours later, the crippled submarine slipped into the subterranean dry dock of Dante's most secure, off-the-grid redoubt: a decommissioned naval bunker hidden beneath the granite cliffs of Montauk, Long Island.

The facility was warm, dry, and completely insulated from the outside world.

In the bunker’s private residential suite, Claire laid baby Leo down in a soft, white cradle. The infant was sound asleep, his breathing deep and peaceful, the terrifying violet cipher on his neck completely gone, replaced by smooth, healthy skin.

Dante sat on the edge of the bed, his wounds freshly bandaged by the bunker’s automated medical pod, watching Claire with a quiet, reverent intensity.

"You should sleep, Claire," Dante said softly, reaching out and taking her bruised hand in his. "My men are guarding the perimeter. The bunker is sealed under four hundred feet of solid granite. Nothing can reach us here."

Claire looked down at her hands. The adrenaline that had sustained her for seventy-two hours was finally draining away, leaving her body shaking with bone-deep exhaustion. She looked at Dante, seeing the man behind the ruthless mafia kingpin—a broken father who had bled himself dry just to buy his son a single peaceful breath.

"What do we do now, Dante?" Claire asked, her voice small, vulnerable for the first time. "The Directorate will rebuild. Someone will always want the cipher."

Dante pulled her gently toward him, his arm wrapping around her waist, drawing her down until her head rested against his chest, right above the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.

"Then we hunt them," Dante murmured into her hair. "Together. As a family."

Claire closed her eyes, letting the warmth of his body and the soft breathing of the baby in the cradle finally pull her toward the edge of sleep. For the first time in three months, the nightmare was over.

Then, from the dark corridor outside the secure suite, the heavy pneumatic lock of the blast door hissed.

*PSSSSSH.*

Claire’s eyes snapped open. Dante immediately reached for the heavy combat pistol resting on the nightstand, his thumb sweeping the safety off in a fraction of a second.

The steel door slid slowly into the wall.

The hallway beyond was empty. The guards were not at their posts. There was no sound of gunfire, no alarms, no screaming.

Only the rhythmic, metallic *tap-tap-tap* of high-heeled combat boots echoing against the concrete floor.

A shadow fell across the nursery threshold.

A woman stepped into the light of the nursery. She was soaking wet, her slate-gray overcoat burned and shredded, the left side of her face blackened by third-degree chemical burns from the helicopter crash. But in her right hand, she wasn't holding a weapon.

She was holding an identical silver pendant—and in her left arm, wrapped in a black tactical blanket, was a second, sleeping baby boy whose neck was glowing with a blinding, incandescent violet light.

Valeria Vance smiled through her cracked, bloody lips, her gray eyes locking onto Claire’s frozen face.

"You really thought there was only one Leviathan, sister?" Valeria whispered. "Meet Leo's twin brother."
