Chapter 45 - The Stolen Heir: A Shadow Reached into the Crib While the Alarms Wailed

The smell of ozone and burning copper drifted down the dimly lit hallway.

The automated alarms wailed in a hypnotic, deadened cadence. Claire didn't move. Her back was pressed against the reinforced wall of Trauma Bay 1, where through the shatterproof glass, she could see three surgeons frantically operating on Dante’s exposed chest, their hands covered in his blood.
"Evans, Miller," Claire whispered over the internal comms channel. "Do you have visual on the perimeter?"
Static hissed in her earpiece. Then, a wet gurgle, followed by the sound of a heavy body hitting the linoleum floor.
"Miller? Evans!" Claire hissed.
"They won't be answering, sister," a voice spoke from the shadows above.
Claire rolled instantly to her left as a steel cable dropped from an open ventilation panel in the ceiling. A dark, leather-clad figure descended with terrifying silence, landing on the floor like a feline predator.
Cora.
She had abandoned her naval uniform. She now wore black infiltration gear, her sidearm holstered, her face devoid of any human warmth. But she wasn't looking at Claire. Her storm-gray eyes were locked directly on baby Leo.
"Hand over the boy, Claire," Cora said, her voice chillingly devoid of malice, carrying only an eerie, professional finality. "He doesn't belong to the Morettis. He belongs to the Program."
"Over my dead body," Claire snarled, raising her weapon.
"That was always the operational design," Cora replied.
In a blur of unnatural speed, Cora lunged. Claire fired twice, but Cora knocked the barrel upward with an open-palm strike before the rounds could find their mark, sending the bullets shattering into the ceiling tiles.
Claire threw a brutal elbow into Cora’s ribs, but Cora absorbed the blow, countering with a sweep that took Claire’s feet out from under her. Claire hit the floor hard, twisting her body at the last millisecond to ensure that Leo was completely cushioned by her chest and arms.
Leo let out a terrified cry, the sound bouncing off the sterile tile walls.
Before Claire could recover her footing, Cora’s boot came down hard on Claire’s wrist, pinning her gun hand to the floor with bone-crushing force. With her other hand, Cora drew a combat knife, pressing the cold steel flat against Claire’s throat.
"Don't move," Cora whispered, her chest heaving slightly.
Claire glared up at her identical twin, her teeth bared, her free arm wrapping protectively around Leo. "If you hurt him, I will hunt you to the ends of the earth. I don't care that we share the same blood."
"You think this is about hurting him?" Cora looked down at the child.
Leo stopped crying. He looked up at the blade pressing into his mother's throat, then his wide, dark eyes met Cora’s. Slowly, without fear, the infant reached his tiny hand upward, wrapping his fingers around Cora’s thumb—the thumb that was gripping the hilt of the knife.
Cora froze.
Her hand began to tremble. A violent tremor ran up her arm, into her shoulder, shaking her entire frame. The cold, mechanical deadness in her eyes fractured, revealing an ocean of agonizing, buried pain.
"He... he feels warm," Cora whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "In the facility... they never let us touch anything warm."
"Cora..." Claire said softly, sensing the break in her sister’s conditioning. "You were stolen. You were raised by monsters. But you don't have to be their weapon anymore. Look at him. He's your nephew."
For three agonizing seconds, Cora stood paralyzed between two worlds: her programming as Subject Zero, and the primal, unbreakable call of the Ellison bloodline.
Suddenly, a loud crash shattered the glass behind them.
Inside the trauma bay, Dr. Croft stood near the operating table, holding a suppressed pistol aimed through the broken viewport—straight at Cora’s head.
