Chapter 63 - Blood on the Winter Ice: Dante Traded His Billion-Dollar Ring for Five Seconds of Oxygen

The shriek of the child cut through the thunder of the rain like a ceramic knife through silk.
Claire felt the sudden, terrifying shift in temperature against her chest. It wasn't the cold chill of death anymore; Leo's body was radiating an unnatural, feverish heat. Steam was beginning to rise from his soaked cotton swaddle, curling into the freezing air like white smoke. The tiny veins spiderwebbing across his temples bulged against his translucent skin, glowing an angry, arterial red.
"He's seizing!" Claire screamed, dropping to her knees on the ice-covered concrete. "Dante, his airway is closing! The pulse is too fast!"
"I told you," Valeria said, her tone devoid of all empathy as her boots crunched closer across the frozen gravel. "The human vessel cannot hold the Leviathan protocol without pharmacological intervention. Give him to me, Claire. Every second you let Dante's pride stand between us is a nail in that boy's coffin."
Dante didn't look back at Valeria. His eyes were entirely on Claire, on the child gasping for air in her trembling arms. For ten years, Dante Moretti had ruled the Five Families of New York through terror, leverage, and cold, unyielding calculation. He had conquered shipping lines, bribed senators, and liquidated rivals without losing an hour of sleep. But standing in the freezing rain of the Navy Yard, watching the only living piece of his lineage choke on its own fire, the empire meant nothing.
He reached down to his right hand.
With a sharp, violent twist that tore the skin of his knuckle, Dante ripped off the heavy platinum signet ring that bore the crest of the House of Moretti—the ancient seal of the family that granted unchecked authority over twelve billion dollars in offshore accounts, private armories, and secret shipping lanes.
He tossed the ring through the air.
It skipped across the ice and clinked against the steel toe of Valeria’s combat boot.
"There is forty percent of the Western seaboard's underground infrastructure tied to that cipher," Dante growled, blood spilling from the corner of his split lip as he took a limping, menacing step toward her. "Take the ring. Take the codes. Marco will transfer the offshore keys right now from his terminal. Just give Claire the damn suppressant."
Valeria stared down at the ring resting against her boot. For a second, a flicker of genuine shock crossed her face, quickly replaced by utter contempt.
"The great Dante Moretti... trading an empire that took three generations to build for the breath of an infant?" She looked up, her gray eyes dead. "You truly are weak, Dante. Just like your father. You never understood what power actually was. Power isn't money. It isn't shipping lanes. Power is the hand that writes the code of the world."
She raised her left hand, gesturing toward her tactical squad. "Kill Dante. Secure the child. If the nanny resists, put a bullet through her shoulder. She shares my DNA; we can harvest her bone marrow later if the child's antigens reject the synthetic protocol."
"Valeria, no!" Claire screamed.
Before the lead commando could raise his rifle, Dante moved.
Despite the torn ligaments in his knee and the shrapnel lodged in his ribs, Dante threw himself forward with the primal, unhinged ferocity of a wounded silverback. He closed the ten-foot gap before the nearest operator could acquire a sight picture, his bare hand slamming into the man’s throat with sickening force. The operator's windpipe shattered with a wet crunch.
Dante ripped the suppressed submachine gun from the falling soldier’s tactical vest, spun on his heel, and fired an eight-round burst directly into the chest of the second commando.
"Marco! NOW!" Dante bellowed.
From the shadows of the rusted crane thirty yards away, Marco didn't use a rifle. He fired an anti-materiel thermite round straight into the exposed hydraulic fuel tank of the warship’s loading gangway.
The resulting explosion wasn't deafening, but it was violently white-hot.
A geyser of liquid fire erupted between Valeria’s squad and the dock, cutting off the gangway and sending three private operators screaming into the churning river below. The intense heat blasted back the freezing rain, creating a wall of suffocating steam that enveloped the entire pier.
"Claire! The drainage culvert!" Dante coughed, his body smoking from the backblast as he staggered back toward her, grabbing her by the strap of her tactical carrier. "The underground maintenance line to the old subway tunnel! Move!"
May you like
Claire didn't hesitate. Shielding Leo’s burning, convulsing body with her own torso, she bolted into the blinding curtain of steam and fire, Dante covering her rear as the warship’s automated turrets began chewing the concrete behind them into pulverized powder.
