Chapter 22 - The Iron Bastion: A Single Touch Revealed the Syndicate’s Most Dangerous Bloodline

The roaring engines of Dante Moretti’s yacht died an instant before the sea fifty yards ahead of his bow erupted into a towering geyser of white foam and shredded steel. The shockwave slammed into his hull, violently tossing the vessel to port, but the twin stabilizing fins locked in place, preventing a capsizal.
On the bridge of the USS *Vanguard*, Claire didn't flinch as the sound of the underwater detonation rattled their hydrophones. "Target avoided primary blast point. Deploy boarding tenders One and Two. SEAL detachment Bravo, you are on point. Non-lethal rules of engagement unless fired upon."
"Admiral, with all due respect," her executive officer, Captain Harris, said stiffly as he stepped into the CIC, "you cannot board a civilian syndicate vessel in international waters without a directive from the Secretary of Defense."
Claire turned slowly, her rank insignia catching the harsh red glow of the battle lamps. "Captain Harris, that vessel contains critical intelligence regarding Julian Vance's rogue splinter faction inside our own naval logistics network. Under Title Ten covert authority granted to me directly by the President, I am the directive. Prepare my sea-suit."
Fifteen minutes later, the hydraulic ramp of the tactical RHIB slammed down against the wet, armored boarding platform of Moretti’s yacht. Rain poured from the heavens in violent sheets. Claire was the first aboard, her suppressed sidearm holstered at her hip, her combat vest slick with salt spray. Six Navy SEALs fanned out behind her, weapons raised in tight sector coverage.
The yacht’s armored saloon doors hissed open.
Dante Moretti stepped into the exterior deck lights. He was soaked to the bone, his dark hair plastered against his forehead, his custom Italian wool jacket ruined by sea brine. But his presence was as overwhelming as ever—a prince of the underworld who had carved his way through blood and fire. In his right hand was a tactical submachine gun, pointed loosely at the deck.
Behind him stood Marco, his scarred chief enforcer, holding a shotgun with knuckles white as bone.
"Lower your weapons," Dante commanded, his voice cutting through the howl of the storm without him even looking at his man.
"Boss, they're federal spec-ops—" Marco growled.
"I said lower them!" Dante snapped with a feral intensity that made Marco instantly sling his weapon.
Dante’s eyes never left Claire. He walked forward, step by heavy step, ignoring the four laser sights trained directly on the center of his chest. He stopped barely two feet from her. His chest heaved with ragged breaths. The scent of rain, gunpowder, and his familiar cedarwood cologne washed over her, threatening to crack the iron discipline she wore like armor.
"You're a Rear Admiral," Dante said, his voice trembling with an emotion he couldn't mask. His gaze traveled over the subdued naval stars pinned to her tactical collar, then back to the gray, piercing eyes he had dreamed of every night since she vanished. "All those weeks... you were changing diapers, singing lullabies, Band-Aiding scratches in my kitchen... and you commanded warships."
"I was a field operator on an extraction protocol, Mr. Moretti," Claire said, her tone professional, clipped, devoid of any warmth. "I did what was necessary to survive and safeguard an innocent child."
At the mention of the child, Dante’s composure shattered. The ruthless mafia Don vanished, replaced by a father driven half-mad by terror. He reached out, his hand trembling as he caught her wrist.
Instantly, two SEALs raised their rifles. "Hands off the Admiral!"
"Stand down!" Claire ordered sharply, without breaking eye contact with Dante.
Dante didn't care about the guns pointed at his skull. His grip on her wrist was desperate, not violent. "They took him, Claire."
The world seemed to lose all sound. The howling wind, the crashing waves, the hum of the nearby warship faded into a vacuum.
"What did you say?" Claire whispered.
"Three days ago," Dante said, his throat tight, tears mingling with the saltwater on his cheeks. "A black-ops kill squad raided the safe house in Patagonia. They didn't come for money. They didn't come to kill me. They knew the biometric frequencies of the nursery. They knew the pendant's cryptographic code. They took Leo."
Claire felt a cold, murderous fury ignite in the pit of her stomach—a rage deeper and deadlier than anything she had felt during the Pentagon tribunals.
"They used Julian Vance’s secondary routing cipher to lure you out here," she said, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "This wasn't an escape route. It was an ambush to eliminate you while they transported Leo to the offshore platform."
"You know where he is?" Dante grabbed both of her arms, his fingers digging into the Kevlar of her vest. "Tell me you know where my son is!"
"He's not just your son, Dante," Claire said, her eyes blazing with an icy fire as she pulled away and unzipped an encrypted tactical pad from her vest. "The pendant you hung around his neck wasn't mafia jewelry. It was the master recovery key for the Navy's deep-ocean autonomous weapons grid. Vance didn't steal your baby for leverage. He stole him because Leo's retinal scan is the only lock left on a weapon capable of sinking half the Seventh Fleet."

Dante stared at her, horrified. "Then we don't just have to save him."
"No," Claire said, turning back toward the boarding craft as her radio crackled to life with fresh tactical telemetry. "We are going to annihilate every single person who put their hands on that cradle."
