Chapter 40 - The Doomsday Key: When the Countdown Reached Zero, the Baby’s Heartbeat Stopped the Warheads

"Don't you dare touch him!" Claire roared.

In a fraction of a second, the universe collapsed into a blur of raw motion. Claire didn't shoot Eleanor; she spun her body, shielding Leo with her own back while simultaneously hurling her combat knife across the ten-foot gap.

The blade struck Eleanor’s right shoulder with a sickening thud, knocking the small firearm from her grasp as it discharged harmlessly into the ceiling plating.

At the exact same instant, Dante moved with demonic speed. He lunged across the platform, his heavy combat boot striking the primary guard in the chest, sending him flying over the railing. With a fluid, terrifying motion, Dante seized Eleanor by the throat, lifting the sixty-year-old architect clean off the deck with one arm, pressing her choking, flailing body against the armored glass overlooking the stormy sea.

"Die," Dante whispered, his fingers crushing her windpipe.

"Wait!" Claire screamed, her hand flying to the main launch console.

The countdown on the main holographic display had not stopped. Instead, Eleanor’s activation had triggered an irreversible launch sequence:

`AUTOMATED FAIL-SAFE ENGAGED.`

`TARGETS: GLOBAL MARITIME POPULATION CENTERS.`

`T-MINUS 60 SECONDS TO MISSILE DEPLOYMENT.`

`MANUAL ABORT OVERRIDE: SIMULTANEOUS PARENTAL & INFANT GENETIC VERIFICATION REQUIRED.`

"The launch can't be canceled by a switch!" Claire said frantically, her eyes darting across the streaming lines of code. "It was programmed with a dead-man's protocol! If the keys aren't verified by the biological tri-factor, the missiles launch automatically to prevent capture!"

"What do we have to do?" Dante demanded, dropping Eleanor’s half-conscious body to the deck and rushing to Claire’s side.

"We have to place our palms on the biometric sensor simultaneously," Claire said, unstrapping Leo with trembling hands. "And Leo's palm must be in the center. The system has to read all three DNA sequences and match our biological resonance within three seconds of each other!"

`T-MINUS 30 SECONDS.`

Through the forward observation windows of the bridge, the ocean began to boil violently three miles off the carrier's bow. Massive underwater missile silos—the submerged ghosts of the Siren Project—began opening their heavy bay doors beneath the churning sea, venting massive plumes of white gas into the sky.

"Dante, now!" Claire yelled.

Dante slammed his massive, scarred left palm onto the left scanner pad. The glass flared bright red: `MORETTI DNA VERIFIED.`

Claire slammed her right palm onto the right scanner pad. The glass flared bright blue: `ELLISON DNA VERIFIED.`

`T-MINUS 10 SECONDS.`

"Leo, baby, please," Claire whispered, her voice choking with tears as she gently guided the infant’s tiny, trembling hand toward the central scanner plate.

Little Leo looked at his mother, his wide, dark eyes filled with trust. He didn't cry. He looked up at Dante, whose hand was shaking for the first time in his life, and then back down at the glowing glass.

Leo pressed his tiny palm against the center.

The console illuminated with a brilliant, blinding emerald flare: `HEIR SEQUENCE IDENTIFIED. BIOMETRIC RESIDENCE DETECTED.`

`T-MINUS 03...`

`T-MINUS 02...`

`T-MINUS 01...`

`OVERRIDE CODE CONFIRMED.`

`LEVIATHAN NETWORK PURGED.`

`MISSILE SILOS SECURED.`

The automated sirens ceased. The blinding red lights of the bridge flickered and transitioned into the cool, steady glow of daylight mode. Across the water, the boiling sea subsided as the automated silos locked back into their subterranean vaults.

Claire fell to her knees, pulling Leo tightly against her chest, weeping tears of pure, overwhelming relief. Dante dropped beside them, wrapping his arms around both of them, kissing Claire’s forehead and then his son’s cheek, his chest heaving with silent, ragged sobs of salvation.

They were safe. The nightmare was over.

Then, from the shadows near the secondary communication bulkhead, a weak, blood-curdling laugh echoed across the quiet bridge.

Eleanor Vance lay slumped against the wall, blood pouring from her severed shoulder, but her lips were pulled back into a ghastly, triumphant sneer.

"You fools..." Eleanor wheezed, her trembling, blood-slicked hand holding up a small, secondary remote detonator—a device that wasn't connected to the launch grid, but to something far closer.

"You thought the Leviathan missiles were the weapon?" Eleanor spat, blood bubbling from her mouth. "The missiles were just the distraction to bring you here! Look down at the carrier's bilge monitors, Admiral Ellison!"

Claire’s head snapped toward the auxiliary damage-control screen.

Her heart stopped.

Beneath the deck they were standing on, inside the carrier’s auxiliary reactor containment chamber, a timer was rapidly ticking down from ten seconds. But it wasn't a military scuttle charge.

The screen read:

`SUBJECT ZERO ACTIVATION DETECTED.`

`CRYO-CHAMBER 01 UNSEALED.`

`GENETIC MATCH: CLAIRE ELLISON IDENTICAL TWIN.`

`STATUS: AWAKE.`

Before Dante or Claire could move, the steel blast doors at the far end of the bridge were violently torn from their hinges with a deafening screech of ripping metal.

Standing in the billowing smoke was a woman with Claire’s exact face, wearing a dark naval uniform, holding a silenced weapon aimed dead-center at Dante's chest.

"Hello, sister," the woman whispered, and pulled the trigger.
