Chapter 84 - The Leviathan’s Nest: The Island That Never Existed

The craft cut through the towering waves for three grueling hours before the jagged outline of the silhouette rose out of the mist like the spine of a prehistoric leviathan.
It was an island not marked on any public maritime chart—a volcanic outcrop wrapped in razor-sharp basalt cliffs and perpetual maritime fog, situated off the desolate shelf of the Labrador Sea. Rising from the sheer rock face was a colossal, brutalist fortress of black reinforced concrete and reinforced glass: the ancestral black site of the founding Moretti syndicate, built during the height of the Cold War with stolen Pentagon funds.
"Isla de la Sombra," Dante whispered, his face pale in the faint green cockpit glow. "My father told me stories when I was a child. He called it the Vault of Sins. He claimed grandfather kept the family's original seed money here. He lied. It wasn't money. It was an arsenal."
As the interceptor approached the jagged cliffs, a hidden underwater gate opened below the water line, creating a powerful artificial current that dragged their craft smoothly inside the belly of the island.
The inner hangar was vast, cold, and lit by sterile surgical fluorescents. There were no armed guards waiting on the docks. No firing squads. Only absolute, terrifying silence, broken only by the hum of massive subterranean generators and the steady drip of condensation from the vaulted ceilings.
Claire stepped onto the concrete quay, her tactical rifle slung low, her eyes scanning every shadow. The two infants were silent now, eerily calm, their eyes fixed on the heavy iron doors at the end of the main corridor.
"He's waiting for us," Claire said, her voice dropping to a battle-hardened whisper. "He wants this confrontation."
Dante racked the slide of his sidearm, checking the chamber. "He thinks because his blood runs in my veins, I won't have the stomach to end him. He’s about to find out how wrong he is."
They moved through the labyrinthine corridors. The walls were lined with vintage framed photographs—sepia-toned images of men in fedoras and sharp suits standing beside American senators, European monarchs, and military brass spanning five decades. Salvatore Moretti had not merely run a mafia family; he had puppeteered the shadowy intersection where organized crime and the military-industrial complex merged.
They reached a set of double vault doors marked with the silver serpent swallowing its tail.
As Claire stepped within three feet of the threshold, the electronic sensor flashed green. A digitized voice echoed from the speakers:
*DNA RECOGNIZED. WELCOME, DR. VANCE’S HEIR. PROJECT OUROBOROS RESUMING.*

The vault doors slid open with a hydraulic hiss, revealing a room that made Claire’s breath catch in her throat.
