Chapter 72 - The Resonance Cascade: When Both Infants Wept, Every Electronic Device in the Eastern Seaboard Died

The emergency red lamps buzzed to life along the baseboards, casting long, bloody silhouettes across the blast-proof nursery.

From the crib, Leo's cries intensified into a piercing shriek. Across the room, Lucian answered with a thin, reedy wail that sent a violent shockwave through the air. Claire felt the static lift the fine hairs on her arms; the digital chronometer on Dante’s tactical watch flashed violently, pixels scrambling before the crystal face snapped in a web of hairline fractures.

"The resonance," Claire gasped, lunging forward despite Dante's outstretched arm. "Dante, let me go! They’re locking into each other's biometrics!"

"Claire, wait!" Dante roared, but she was already on her knees beside her dying twin.

Claire did not look at Valeria's weapon; she reached straight into the tactical folds of the blanket. The moment her bare fingers brushed the infant’s burning cheek, an electric jolt shot straight through her nervous system, dragging an involuntary cry from her lips. The baby was burning with a localized fever, his skin radiating the terrifying chemical heat of an uncontrolled bio-digital feedback loop.

"He doesn't know how to disperse the charge," Valeria whispered, her hand weakly clutching Claire’s sleeve. "They designed them to be proximity-linked. Separating them was what triggered the Leviathan's self-destruct countdown in Callao. If they don't touch within seconds, the harmonic surge will fry their cerebral cortexes."

"Bring him to the crib," Claire commanded, her voice regaining the absolute, razor-sharp authority of a naval commander in the center of a firefight. "Dante! Clear the perimeter, but keep your eyes on that corridor. Now!"

Dante hesitated for a fraction of a second. His instincts screamed ambush—screamed that Valeria Vance was a weapon deployed by an invisible council to bring down his fortress from within. But looking at Claire’s face, pale with primal terror, the billionaire kingpin made his choice. He racked the slide of his sidearm, spun toward the dark hallway, and dropped into a combat crouch, guarding the only approach.

Claire scooped the second boy into her arms. He felt impossibly light, his tiny chest heaving against her collarbone. As she stood and turned toward the crib, the violet glare radiating from both pendants intensified until the walls seemed to dissolve in ultraviolet fire.

She laid Lucian down beside Leo.

For two heartbeats, the world stopped spinning. The air pressure dropped so abruptly that Claire’s ears popped. The two identical faces turned toward one another in the velvet-lined mahogany bed. Their tiny hands, instinctively searching through the air, brushed together.

*SNAP.*

A sharp, static discharge arced between their fingers, followed by an immediate, profound silence.

The crying ceased instantly. The violet glare softened into a steady, hypnotic sapphire glow. Leo exhaled a soft, bubbling breath, his tiny fingers curling tight around his brother's wrist. Lucian’s chest slowed its erratic, feverish flutter, falling into perfect, synchronized rhythm with his twin.

Above them, through the reinforced blast skylight, Claire saw the skyline of Washington D.C. blink out. The monuments, the Pentagon across the river, the federal complexes—every single grid fell into total, pitch-black darkness.
