Chapter 44 - The Broken Fortress: The Hospital Was Surrounded by Men in Black Suits and No Badges

The torrential downpour over the Virginia coast showed no mercy as the SH-60 Seahawk touched down on the reinforced rooftop helipad of Portsmouth Naval Medical Center.

The moment the wheels hit the concrete, the flight deck was swarmed not by ordinary Navy corpsmen in scrubs, but by a heavily armed detachment wearing unmarked tactical plate carriers over black suits. Their weapons were drawn, barrels held at low-ready, their eyes scanning the helicopter’s interior with predatory scrutiny.

Claire stepped out first, her rifle resting across her forearm, one hand firmly supporting baby Leo inside her tactical jacket. Her eyes narrowed into slits of ice.

"Stand down, weapons!" a voice barked through the rain.

A tall man in a pristine charcoal overcoat approached, sheltered by an umbrella held by an aide. It was Dr. Julian Croft, Chief of Surgical Operations and a high-ranking liaison to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"Admiral Ellison," Croft said smoothly, his eyes darting toward the litter being pushed down the chopper's ramp. "We received the emergency dispatch. We have Trauma Bay 1 prepped for Mr. Moretti. Hand the infant to my medical staff; we need to run pediatric decontamination immediately."

A nurse stepped forward, hands reaching toward Leo.

Claire leveled the muzzle of her SIG Sauer directly at the nurse’s forehead. The woman froze, gasping.

"No one touches my son," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register that made the armed men around Croft stiffen their trigger fingers. "You touch him, and I empty this magazine through your skull."

Dr. Croft raised his hands pacifyingly, a thin, polished smile touching his lips. "Admiral, you've suffered severe operational trauma. You're exhibiting signs of acute combat paranoia. That child has been exposed to hazardous engine fumes—"

"I know protocol, Julian," Claire cut him off, stepping forward until the barrel of her weapon was three inches from Croft’s chest. "I also know that your signature was on the transfer orders that shipped Subject Zero out of Bethesda in 1999."

Croft’s smile vanished. His jaw clenched, the muscles along his cheek twitching once.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Claire," Croft whispered, leaning in so the aides couldn't hear. "Dante Moretti is a syndicate warlord. He controls assets that the United States Government needs to secure before the market opens at dawn. If he dies on that table, those assets freeze. If you cooperate, you and your child walk away with total immunity. If you fight me... this hospital becomes a morgue."

"I am the Senior Ranking Officer on this installation until General Vance arrives," Claire spat into his face. "And if you kill Dante, you will never get the biometric keys to his financial empire. Because the only person Dante gave the master codes to... is strapped to my chest."

Croft’s eyes dropped to baby Leo. A flicker of realization, followed by cold greed, flashed across his features.

"Clear the corridor!" Claire commanded, turning to the two Navy rescue swimmers who had flown with them from the carrier. "Petty Officer Evans, Master Chief Miller—you answer to me. Lock down Trauma Bay 1. Shoot anyone who enters without my verbal authorization."

"Aye aye, Admiral!" Evans barked, chambering a round into his shotgun.

They pushed Dante’s gurney through the double blast doors into the sterile white halls of the trauma center. Dante was drifting in and out of consciousness, his fingers blindly reaching out, twitching against the metal guardrails of the bed. Claire caught his hand.

"I'm here, Dante," she whispered, leaning over him as the surgical team rushed to prepare the arterial clamps. "I have Leo. We're right here."

Dante gripped her fingers with the last ounce of his fading strength, pulling her down until his lips brushed her ear.

"The... safe in the nursery..." Dante wheezed, his breath smelling of copper and anesthetic. "Under Leo's crib... Cora doesn't want the money, Claire... She wants... the file labeled *The Genesis Covenant*... Stop her..."

The heart monitor screamed a violent alarm as Dante’s blood pressure plummeted through the floor.

"He's crashing! Ventricular rupture! We need to crack his chest right now!" the trauma surgeon shouted, pushing Claire back. "Admiral, you have to exit the surgical theater! Now!"

The doors swung shut, locking Claire out behind the reinforced observation glass.

Suddenly, every light in the hallway flickered twice and died.

The low, rumbling hum of the backup diesel generators kicked on, bathing the sterile white corridor in an eerie, sickly amber glow.

At the end of the long hallway, the elevator doors chimed.

Claire raised her weapon, sliding Leo behind her hip. The steel doors slid open. The elevator was empty—except for a single, dripping puddle of water on the floor, and a small, silver pacifier that Claire had dropped on the flight deck an hour ago.
