Chapter 85 - The Nursery of Ghosts: The Alpha Iterations

It was not a throne room. It was an advanced bio-genetics laboratory.

And in the center of the vast, circular chamber stood seven glass cryo-chambers arranged in an arc, bathed in pale blue coolant liquid.

Claire walked slowly toward the first chamber, her hand trembling as she wiped the frost from the observation glass. Inside, suspended in nutrient solution, was an infant—identical in features to Leo. A digital status readout below the tank read: *ITERATION THREE - CARDIAC FAILURE AT 18 WEEKS.*

She moved to the second: *ITERATION FIVE - NEURAL CASCADE COLLAPSE.*

"My God..." Claire choked out, tears of horror and revulsion burning her eyes. "Leo wasn't a miracle. He was the first one who survived."

"Not the first, Claire," a smooth, cultured voice echoed from the elevated observation balcony. "The *only two* who achieved harmonic stabilization. The Alpha and the Omega."

Salvatore Moretti walked down the curving iron staircase. He carried no weapons. He was flanked only by an elderly woman in a doctor’s white lab coat—a woman whose aged, gaunt face sent a violent jolt of shock straight through Claire’s nervous system.

"Aunt Elena?" Claire whispered, her voice cracking. "You... you were the chief medical officer who signed my mother’s death certificate."

"Your mother was sentimental, Claire," Elena said coldly, adjusting her spectacles with clinical detachment. "She thought she could run away with the military research we developed here. She thought she could hide you in the public healthcare system. But your DNA was always tethered to this facility. You were raised to be the cradle."

Dante raised his weapon, the barrel leveled squarely at his grandfather’s heart. "Step away from them, Salvatore. I will put a bullet through your head before you finish your next breath."

Salvatore didn't flinch. He walked straight toward Dante until the cold muzzle of the .45 pressed firmly against the center of his forehead.

"Pull the trigger then, Dante," the old man challenged softly, his hazel eyes gleaming with manic certainty. "Kill your creator. But know this: both boys possess a synthetic neuro-link tied to my personal biometric monitor. If my heart stops beating... their neural pathways will receive a lethal microwave overload within three seconds. Kill me, and you murder your sons."
