Chapter 23 - The Midnight Intercept: When the Warship Locked On, the Traitor Begged for Mercy

The tactical situation room aboard the *Vanguard* was thick with tension. Dante Moretti stood beside Claire at the edge of the holographic command deck, his presence an anomaly among naval officers in spotless khakis and digital camouflage. Captain Harris looked like he was about to suffer a stroke, watching an internationally wanted cartel boss leaning over the United States Navy's most classified real-time satellite feeds.
"If the Pentagon finds out about this, Admiral Ellison," Harris warned quietly from the corner, "you won't just be court-martialed. You'll be locked in Fort Leavenworth until you die."
Claire didn't even turn around. "Captain Harris, if I don't stop this weapon platform from going operational, the Pentagon will be answering to a congressional inquiry about how two hundred sailors died in an unprovoked maritime disaster. Return to your quarters or assist the navigation team. Do not speak again."
Harris flushed red, clamped his jaw shut, and stepped back into the shadows.
"Here," Claire said, tapping the glass interface. A three-dimensional thermal model of a decommissioned semi-submersible drilling rig resolved in the center of the display. "Platform *Aegis-9*. Located seventy miles west of the Galápagos exclusion zone. Officially scrapped four years ago by a dummy corporation. In reality, it was bought by a consortium linked to Julian Vance’s offshore accounts."
"They have heavy security," Dante observed, his criminal instincts instantly reading the tactical weak points. "Radar domes on the upper cranes. Anti-air batteries on the helipad. Look at those patrol boats circling the support legs. That’s not mercenary work—that’s military-grade perimeter defense."
"It's rogue private military contractors," Claire confirmed. "Former special forces hired by Vance's financiers. They think they're invisible out here because they're operating under an electronic cloaking shroud powered by Vance's decrypted naval software."
"Can the *Vanguard* blow them out of the water?" Dante asked, his voice dark and merciless.
"Leo is on that platform, Dante!" Claire turned on him, her eyes fierce. "A single Tomahawk missile will trigger the platform's self-destruct failsafe. We go in by air and water simultaneously. A low-altitude HALO drop onto the primary derrick to cut their comms, while a submersible team infiltrates the lower stabilization pontoons to secure the baby."
Dante leaned in, his face inches from hers. "I'm going on that drop."
"You're not trained for high-altitude military jumps," she countered coldly.
"I don't give a damn about your military protocols!" Dante snarled, the raw authority of a man who controlled empires erupting to the surface. "That is my flesh and blood down there! He cries when strangers hold him. He panics in the dark! You know that better than anyone! If you think I'm going to sit in this floating metal box while you fight for my son, you don't know who I am."
Claire stared into his desperate, blazing eyes. She remembered the nights in the fortress—how this terrifying man would sit beside the crib for hours, terrified of breaking the tiny life entrusted to him. She knew that beneath the tailored armor and ruthless violence, Dante Moretti loved that boy more than life itself.
"Miller," Claire said without looking away from Dante. "Suit him up. If he breaks formation during the descent, let the sea take him."
"Yes, Admiral!"
Thirty minutes later, the rear cargo bay of an MV-22 Osprey opened into the freezing night sky at twenty-five thousand feet. Below them, through broken storm clouds, the distant lights of Platform *Aegis-9* flickered like a pale ghost upon the churning ocean.
Claire stood at the edge of the ramp, her oxygen mask locked in place, her tactical helmet fitted with an integrated heads-up display. Behind her, six Navy SEALs and Dante Moretti checked their altimeters. Dante was encased in a black pressurized flight suit, his eyes behind the tinted visor locked onto hers.
The jump light flickered from red to yellow.
Then, a sudden siren wailed through Claire’s tactical earpiece. The voice of Commander Miller crackled through the secure datalink from the *Vanguard*.
*"Admiral! Red alert! The platform just initiated the activation sequence! We're detecting a massive thermal surge in their lower ballast chambers! The deep-sea drone cradle is opening—they're arming the warheads!"*
Claire hit the comm button on her wrist. "What's the countdown, Miller?"
*"Fourteen minutes until the automated launch sequence locks out external abort codes! Admiral, if those drones clear the bay, you won't be able to stop them!"*

The jump light flashed bright green.
"Jump!" Claire shouted over the rushing slipstream, throwing herself forward into the roaring void.
