Chapter 24 - Blood on the Radar: She Walked Into the Viper's Nest With Only a Silver Star

The drop through the freezing storm was an exercise in controlled terror.

The Pacific wind roared against Claire's pressurized suit like a freight train, tearing at her limbs as she plunged through ten thousand feet of absolute blackness. Her helmet display tracked their descent speed in glowing green digits—one hundred and twenty miles per hour, straight toward the metallic silhouette of the offshore rig.

Beside her, Dante's tracker drifted slightly off vector. Without hesitation, Claire adjusted her body angle, cutting through the turbulence to grab his tactical harness, stabilizing his trajectory before the wind could spin him into a terminal spiral. Through his visor, she saw his wide, adrenaline-flooded eyes. She gave him a single, curt nod, then reached for her rip-cord.

*Pop.*

The stealth ram-air parachutes deployed with a muffled snap at twelve hundred feet. The violent deceleration jerked them upward into the driving rain, and seconds later, their boots slammed onto the corrugated steel deck of the platform’s uppermost crane tower.

Claire cut her risers in a smooth, continuous motion, her suppressed carbine already raised.

Two armed guards in unmarked black tactical gear rushed around the corner of the crane cabin, radios crackling against their chests. Before they could raise their weapons, Claire fired two controlled pairs. The suppressed pops were swallowed entirely by the howling gale. The guards collapsed silently onto the wet grating.

Dante hit the deck behind her, detached his chute with brutal efficiency, and drew a modified ceramic automatic pistol from his chest holster. The SEAL detachment landed in tight unison, securing the perimeter within six seconds.

"Bravo Two, take the elevator shaft and disable the backup generators," Claire ordered in a low, sharp whisper over the tactical net. "Bravo Three, secure the helipad. Dante, on my six. We move to the command module."

They moved like lethal ghosts through the labyrinth of rusting pipes and salt-corroded catwalks. The smell of burning diesel and ozone grew stronger as they descended into the core of the rig. Every corridor was illuminated by the harsh, rotating amber lights of an active launch sequence.

Through the grating beneath their feet, Claire could see the rig's cavernous center well—the "moon pool." Submerged fifty feet below the dark ocean surface inside the pool hung a massive, black titanium cylinder: the autonomous naval hunter-killer drone, its guide lights blinking red in the depths.

And standing on the primary control platform overlooking the pool was a man in an impeccably pressed naval officer’s trench coat, surrounded by eight heavily armed mercenaries.

Claire stopped at the edge of the catwalk shadow, her carbine sights resting directly on the back of the officer’s neck.

It was Captain Paul Vance. Julian Vance's older brother—a senior desk director from the Pentagon’s Maritime Logistics Bureau who had conveniently disappeared during the initial inquest.

In Paul Vance’s arms, wrapped in a tactical survival blanket, was a tiny, writhing bundle.

Leo.

The child's frantic, piercing wails echoed over the hum of the cooling generators, cutting through the metal corridors like a knife. The sound was hoarse, ragged—the cry of an infant who had been screaming for days until his throat was torn raw.

Beside Claire, Dante’s entire body went rigid. His breath hitched in his throat, and his gun barrel trembled with an overwhelming urge to charge forward and tear every man on that platform apart with his bare hands.

Claire placed an iron hand on Dante’s shoulder, pressing him flat against the bulkhead. "Don't," she whispered, her lips barely moving. "Look at the mercenary by his right flank. He has a remote detonator wired to the baby's harness. If you fire, he releases the dead-man switch."

Dante looked, his face draining of all color. A cold, nauseating horror washed over the mafia Don. "My God... they wired him to the cradle."

Paul Vance turned toward the center of the control room, his voice amplified by the rig's industrial PA system. "I know you're here, Admiral Ellison!"

Claire didn't move.

"You think because you wear those shiny silver stars that you understand real power?" Vance sneered into the empty catwalks, holding the screaming infant closer to the railing above the churning moon pool. "My brother was a visionary! He spent a decade building a backdoor into the United States naval grid, selling the ultimate asymmetric deterrent to the highest bidder! And you destroyed it all for a pat on the head from the Secretary of Defense!"

Vance leaned over the rail, holding the crying baby out over the dark, churning water below.

"Step out, Claire!" Vance screamed, his voice cracking with unhinged mania. "Step out and enter the master override codes on the primary terminal! If you don't, I drop this bastard child into the propeller wash, and the drone launches on its automated strike sequence anyway!"

Dante looked at Claire, his eyes begging with an agony no kingpin should ever endure.

Claire exhaled slowly. She slung her carbine behind her back. She unclipped her tactical helmet, letting it drop to the metal grating with a hollow clatter. Her dark hair spilled over her shoulders, soaked by the rain blowing through the open derrick.

She reached into her vest pocket, pulled out the polished silver rank insignia of a Rear Admiral, and pinned it directly to the center of her soaked uniform collar.

Then, she stepped out from the shadows onto the open gantry, alone, unarmed, her chin held high as the storm raged around her.

"I'm here, Vance," she said, her voice clear, calm, and terrifyingly steady. "Put the child down."
