Chapter 27 - The Admiral’s Gambit: One Step Ahead of the Hit Squad in the Fog

"They're scrubbing the site!" Captain Harris’s voice cracked over the emergency fleet channel. "Admiral Ellison, you have incoming kinetic ordnance! The *Vanguard* cannot intercept from this angle without exposing our flank to the sub's torpedo tubes!"

"Stand your ground, Harris!" Claire shouted into her comm-link as she swung Leo around to her chest, securing him inside a reinforced tactical front-carrier. "Prepare the Phalanx CIWS systems on the *Vanguard's* port side! Set radar coverage to automated sector sweep!"

"Claire, we have to get to the helicopter!" Dante yelled over the rising scream of the incoming missile engines tearing through the night sky.

"The helicopter is a radar beacon in this storm!" Claire grabbed Dante by his vest, hauling him toward the industrial diving cage suspended over the moon pool. "The incoming missiles are radar-guided Harpoons! They're locked onto the rig's superstructure! Into the cage! Now!"

The SEAL team was already moving with machine-like precision. Two operators dragged the bound and gagged Paul Vance into the heavy steel dive cage, while the remaining operators took positions inside the reinforced mesh.

"Hang on!" Claire shouted, slamming her hand down on the mechanical emergency release lever.

The heavy steel cable unspooled at terminal velocity.

The dive cage plunged forty feet straight down through the open moon pool, slamming into the turbulent black water of the Pacific with a violent roar of displaced foam. The sudden immersion cut off the sound of the howling storm, replacing it with the muffled, echoing hum of the ocean depths.

Three seconds later, the world above them exploded into pure fire.

Two Harpoon anti-ship missiles slammed directly into the control module of Platform *Aegis-9*. The explosion was cataclysmic. Thousands of tons of structural steel tore apart in a blinding orange inferno. The shockwave through the water was deafening, rattling the bars of the dive cage and sending a massive plume of superheated steam and twisted debris raining down into the moon pool.

Inside the cage, twenty feet submerged, Claire held Leo tightly against her chest, her body absorbing the tremors. The baby whimpered against the pressure, his tiny hands clutching the lapels of her dive suit, but Claire kept her helmet pressed against his, whispering calming words through the internal mic.

The wreckage of the burning rig began to collapse inward, massive steel beams sinking into the sea like dying giants.

"We have to clear the drop zone before the derrick collapses on top of us!" Dante shouted through his diver comms, pointing toward the open ocean beyond the rig’s stabilization legs.

"SEAL team, deploy underwater propulsion units!" Claire ordered.

Four diver propulsion vehicles (DPVs) hummed to life, their electric thrusters churning the dark water into silent trails of bubbles. Hooking their harnesses together in a tactical tow-line, the team dragged the dive cage through the murky depths, slipping out from beneath the burning shadow of the collapsing platform just as the four-thousand-ton main derrick crashed into the sea where they had been suspended seconds before.

As they cleared the debris field, rising slowly to periscope depth five hundred yards away from the burning inferno, the dark, predatory silhouette of the USS *Vanguard* materialized through the ocean fog like an avenging ghost.

The destroyer’s secondary searchlights cut through the rain, locking onto the surfaced dive cage.

"Friendly divers spotted!" a voice boomed over the *Vanguard's* external directional speakers. "Lower the recovery crane! Medical team to the flight deck!"

Ten minutes later, Claire stood on the rain-swept flight deck of the warship. Medical corpsmen rushed forward with warm thermal blankets, immediately swarming around Leo.

Dante stood right beside them, refusing to let the doctors take the boy out of his sight, but his eyes constantly flicked back to Claire. She stood motionless on the edge of the flight line, water streaming down her pale face, her jaw clenched as she watched the burning remains of Platform *Aegis-9* sink into the dark horizon.

Commander Miller rushed out of the bridge superstructure, a secure red folder in his hands.

"Admiral," Miller said, his face dead serious. "We've confirmed the identity of the submarine that fired those missiles."

Claire turned, her eyes burning with an icy, lethal focus. "Tell me."

"It's the USS *Proteus*," Miller whispered. "A nuclear fast-attack submarine. Officially deployed on a deep-patrol mission in the southern hemisphere under direct orders from Vice Admiral Robert Sterling. They're not answering our fleet comms. They just re-submerged and are running silent toward the Panama Canal."

"He's going back to Washington," Dante said, stepping up to Claire's side, his hand resting on the hilt of his weapon. "Sterling is going to purge the Pentagon servers before that black box data can be entered into the congressional record."

Claire reached into her vest, pulled out the encrypted flash drive, and turned it over in her hand. The cold metal felt heavy with the weight of hundreds of lives.

"He won't make it to Washington," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. "Captain Harris!"

The warship’s captain snapped to attention, completely subdued by the sheer operational brilliance he had just witnessed. "Yes, Admiral?"

"Plot an intercept vector for the Panama approaches. Arm all anti-submarine rocket-assisted torpedoes. If Admiral Sterling wants to wage a war against this command, I am going to give him one."
