Chapter 46 - The Admiral’s Confession: A Dying General Whispered the Truth About the Two Sisters

The bullet tore through the air where Cora’s head had been a millisecond before. Her combat instincts overwhelmed her hesitation; she twisted, diving across the floor as Croft fired two more rounds through the observation glass.
"Traitor!" Cora hissed, coming up behind a steel laundry cart, her knife replaced by a high-caliber pistol.
"Claire, move!" a gravelly, broken roar erupted from inside the operating room.
Claire’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief.
Dante Moretti was on his feet.
His chest was packed with surgical sponges, a temporary bypass tube hanging from his subclavian vein, his face pale as chalk—yet he had ripped the endotracheal tube from his own throat. With one blood-slicked hand, Dante had grabbed Dr. Croft from behind, wrenching the doctor's gun arm behind his back until the bone snapped with a sickening *CRACK.*
Croft screamed in agony as Dante slammed the corrupt surgeon’s face down onto the stainless steel instrument tray, sending scalpels and clamps clattering across the room.
"You touched my wife," Dante growled, his voice a terrifying demonic rattle. "You threatened my son."
Dante picked up an eight-inch bone saw from the tray and shoved the blunt end into Croft’s throat, pinning the screaming doctor against the surgical table.
"Dante! Stop!" Claire yelled, scrambling to her feet with Leo. "He knows who gave the order!"
Outside the trauma room, Cora emerged from behind the cart, her gun trained on Croft. The three of them—the Mafia Don drenched in his own blood, the Navy Admiral holding their child, and the assassin who wore the Admiral's face—formed a deadly, breathless triangle.
Croft choked, blood bubbling on his lips, staring at the three lethal figures standing over him.
"You... you think this ends with me?" Croft wheezed, laughing weakly. "I was just the custodian. General Vance is already dead, Claire. But your father... Jonathan Ellison... he didn't die in that helicopter crash ten years ago."
Claire felt the air leave her lungs. "You're lying. I attended his military funeral at Arlington. I laid the flag on his casket!"
"An empty box!" Croft hissed, his eyes bulging as Dante pressed the saw deeper into his windpipe. "Jonathan Ellison founded the Syndicate, Claire! Dante’s father didn't build the Moretti empire alone... The Ellison family provided the military intelligence, and the Morettis provided the shadow capital! Dante was never meant to marry some civilian... He was matched with you from birth to seal the treaty between the military deep state and the criminal underworld!"
Claire looked at Dante. Dante’s jaw was set like granite, his dark eyes burning with an unreadable, suffocating guilt.
"Dante..." Claire whispered, her voice shaking. "Did you know?"
"Not until the night you showed up at the estate," Dante confessed hoarsely, his eyes never leaving Croft. "When I saw your name tag... *Ellison*... I realized my father’s final journal wasn't a fairy tale. You weren't an accident, Claire. You were the contract."
"And Cora?" Claire demanded, pointing at her sister. "What was she?"
"The insurance policy," Croft spat. "If you refused to bear the heir... Cora was conditioned to replace you. And now... Jonathan Ellison is waiting at the terminal in Manhattan. He's activating the full liquidation of the Moretti accounts at midnight."
Before Croft could utter another syllable, Cora pulled the trigger.
*BANG.*

Croft’s body went limp against the operating table, a neat black hole between his eyes. Cora lowered her smoking gun, her face once again an impassive mask of stone.
"He talked too much," Cora said flatly. She looked at Claire, then at Dante. "If our father is in New York... he has an army waiting for you. And he won't hesitate to kill any of us."
