Chapter 76 - The Architect’s Sanctuary: The Deep-Water Silo That Stood Off the Coast of Montauk

The subterranean run lasted seven violent, bone-rattling minutes.

When the transport finally decelerated, the tracks ended at an enormous subterranean cavern smelling of brine, rust, and heavy machine oil. The water of the Potomac River lap-lapped against an underground quay that hadn't seen daylight since the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Tied to the concrete pier, black and menacing as a leviathan resting in the abyss, was the hull of an unmarked, heavily modified nuclear-class submersible. Its sails bore no flag, no serial numbers—only the discreet crest of the Moretti shipping dynasty stamped in forged titanium upon the conning tower.

"She's fully automated," Dante explained as he dragged Valeria up the boarding plank, his voice hollow with exhaustion. "Automated reactor, crew complement reduced to sixteen loyalists who would die before taking an order from Washington. We slip out through the river mouth before the Coast Guard even realizes their sonar buoys are disabled."

Claire hurried down the vertical hatch into the sub’s command center. The crew—hard-eyed men and women with identical syndicate tattoos on their forearms—snapped to their stations without a word. They didn't ask questions; they saw the billionaire patriarch, the naval uniform of the woman beside him, and the two glowing children in the tactical harness.

"Set depth to one-eighty," Dante barked, taking his position at the central tactical console. "Rig for ultra-quiet. Chart a direct course toward the Montauk Trench."

Valeria was placed on the medical cot in the adjoining compartment. A syndicate field medic immediately began working on her burns, cutting away the shredded Kevlar.

Claire walked to the navigation display. Her eyes narrowed as she watched the sonar waterfall display scroll across the high-resolution monitors.

"Dante," she said, pointing a finger at a cluster of five distinct acoustic signatures waiting just outside the continental shelf. "Look at the thermal blooms. Those aren't standard naval cutters."

Dante leaned over her shoulder, his chest pressing against her back, his hand coming down firmly beside hers on the console. "Those are private defense carriers. Vanguard Global. The Admiral’s personal fleet."

"They knew we'd come this way," Claire said, turning to look into his dark, ruthless eyes. "They didn't just come to capture the children, Dante. They're blockading the coast because the primary Leviathan platform isn't in Washington. It's offshore. And it's preparing to transmit."

Suddenly, the intercom speaker above them crackled. A baby’s giggle echoed through the ship's comm system.

Claire whipped around.

Inside the medical compartment, the two infants were awake. Leo was sitting up, his small chubby hands reaching toward the ship's central processing interface—and the green displays on the navigation console were turning blood-red on their own.
