Chapter 29 - The Fortress of Broken Mirrors: The Vault Opened, and It Was Not Gold Inside

The flight back to the United States was silent.

Aboard the military C-37 transport jet, Dante Moretti sat in the VIP leather lounger, holding Leo in his lap. The boy had finally fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, his small hand still firmly clutched around the silver pendant Claire had retrieved from the rig's control module.

Across the aisle sat Claire. She had removed her dress cap, her hair falling loosely around her exhausted face. Her laptop was open on the polished mahogany table, displaying the decrypted files recovered from Sterling’s personal hard drives.

Dante watched her for a long time before speaking. "You could have let the missiles hit the platform five seconds later. You could have let Sterling's men erase everything, walked away, and lived a life without orders, without targets on your back."

Claire didn't look up from her screen. "That’s not who I am, Dante."

"I know," Dante murmured, his voice softening into something raw, intimate, and profoundly vulnerable. "That’s why when you were in my house... when you were holding my son in that nursery... I knew you were the only real thing in a world made of glass and blood."

Claire paused, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She raised her eyes to meet his. The dangerous mafia boss—the man who controlled shipping empires and commanded armies of killers—looked at her with an open, undisguised reverence that made her chest tighten with an ache she couldn't afford to feel.

"Dante," she whispered. "We belong to two different worlds. You rule from the shadows. I operate in the light of the chain of command. If the Department of Justice uncovers the full extent of our cooperation—"

"I don't give a damn about the Department of Justice," Dante interrupted, leaning forward, his gaze burning into hers. "I am stepping down."

Claire blinked, stunned. "What?"

"The Moretti syndicate is done," Dante stated with absolute finality. "I've already instructed Marco to liquidate our private military assets and transfer our commercial shipping lines into a blind international trust. I took over this empire to survive. But watching my son held over that ocean... knowing that my world brought that horror upon him... I won't let him inherit this curse."

He looked down at Leo, brushing a soft curl of hair from the baby's forehead. "He needs a father. A real one. Not a ghost in a bespoke suit waiting for a bullet."

Claire felt a lump form in her throat. She looked at the man who had terrified the eastern seaboard, now willing to burn an empire to ash just to give his child a normal life.

"Where will you go?" she asked quietly.

"Somewhere far away from Washington. Somewhere with green hills and an ocean that doesn't smell like cordite," Dante said. He looked back up at her, his dark eyes pleading. "Come with us, Claire."

The cabin went dead silent, save for the low hum of the jet engines at forty thousand feet.

Claire looked at Dante, then at little Leo sleeping peacefully beneath the soft cashmere blanket. For a fleeting, intoxicating moment, she imagined it: taking off the uniform, hanging up the silver stars, walking away from the endless war games, the classified briefings, and the cold loneliness of command. She imagined waking up to the sound of Leo’s laughter instead of sirens and satellite alerts.

She parted her lips to speak.

Suddenly, her secure red communications terminal on the table chimed with three sharp, high-priority alert tones.

`FLASH PRIORITY COMMUNIQUE`

`FROM: THE WHITE HOUSE SITUATION ROOM`

`EYES ONLY: REAR ADMIRAL CLAIRE ELLISON`

Claire stiffened. The warrior and the commander instantly locked back into place, burying the woman beneath the armor. She swiped her thumb across the biometrics to open the transmission.

A high-definition video feed of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff appeared on the screen, his face grim, his office behind him buzzing with frantic activity.

*"Admiral Ellison,"* the Chairman spoke in a hushed, urgent tone. *"We have a catastrophic security breach. Thirty minutes ago, a shadow operative breached the deep-storage containment vault at the Naval Medical Research Center in Bethesda."*

Claire’s eyebrows pulled together. "What was taken, General?"

The Chairman leaned closer to his camera, his voice shaking with a fear Claire had never heard in a four-star general before.

*"They didn't steal a weapon, Claire. They stole the original biometric medical records and genetic samples from the 2004 Adriatic black-ops program."* The General paused, his eyes looking straight through the lens at her. *"The program that bio-engineered the neural encryption keys tied to Julian Vance's network. The operative left a calling card at the scene."*

May you like

"Whose calling card?" Claire demanded, her heart dropping like lead.

*"Your mother's, Admiral. The woman you buried twenty years ago."*
