Chapter 42 - The Ghost of the Seventh Fleet: The Classified Twin They Swore Never Existed

The klaxons aboard the ghost carrier shifted from the pulsating crimson of missile launch to the shrill, deafening strobe of a catastrophic core containment breach.

"Hold the pressure pack down!" Claire barked at Dante, grabbing his wrist and forcing his own hand onto the clotting gauze. Dante gritted his teeth, a guttural groan escaping his chest as the chemically treated fibers burned against his severed artery.
Claire slung the rifle over her shoulder, tightened Leo’s harness against her chest, and hooked Dante’s left arm over her shoulders. She was five-foot-nine of pure military conditioning, but lifting a two-hundred-and-twenty-pound mafia boss while carrying an eight-month-old infant was an agonizing feat of pure will. Her spine screamed as she hoisted Dante to his feet.
"Move your legs, Dante!" she demanded into his ear. "One step. Give me one step!"
Dante groaned, dragging his boots across the bloodied deck plates, forcing his failing nervous system to obey. "I told you... you should have stayed in Virginia..." he muttered deliriously, his head lolling against her neck.
"Shut up and walk," Claire snarled. "We have a family dinner on Sunday and you're paying the bill."
They tumbled through the shattered blast doors into the secondary service corridor. Steam hissed from ruptured hydraulic lines, obscuring the path in blinding white fog. Every ten seconds, the immense steel hull groaned like a dying sea beast as thousands of tons of freezing Atlantic water rushed into the lower torpedo decks.
Ahead of them, a tactical tablet mounted on the bulkhead flickered with an urgent priority transmission. Claire slammed the comms override button with her elbow as they passed.
The screen blinked, resolving into the grim, battle-hardened face of Admiral Mark Sterling—one of the few men left in the Pentagon who still answered Claire’s encrypted direct frequency.
"Claire! Thank God you're breathing," Sterling shouted over the roar of helicopter blades in the background. "We're six miles out with a strike package from the USS Gerald R. Ford. What is your status?"
"The carrier is scuttling!" Claire yelled back, struggling to keep Dante upright against the shaking wall. "Dante has a chest wound—gucking chest wound, right clavicle, arterial involvement! And Admiral... Eleanor Vance wasn't working alone. She activated a clone. An identical double of me. Tagged as Subject Zero."
There was a dead, suffocating silence on the other end of the radio. Even over the static, Claire could hear Sterling’s breath hitch.
"My God..." Sterling whispered, his voice trembling with an old, buried horror. "Project Gemini. They told the Senate committee the embryos were incinerated in 1999."
"Explain. Now!" Claire demanded, feeling Dante’s weight becoming heavier, his boots dragging like dead lead.
"During the Cold War, your father—Admiral Jonathan Ellison—was head of the Black Horizon division," Sterling confessed, his voice tight with guilt. "They extracted genetic material from the Ellison bloodline. They wanted to create the ultimate clandestine asset—someone with your family's high-tier biometric clearances hardwired into their DNA. Your mother gave birth to twins, Claire. You weren't a single child. Vance and the cabal stole the second infant from Bethesda Naval Hospital and forged the death certificate!"
Claire’s world violently tilted on its axis.
*A twin.*
Not a laboratory freak or an artificial clone grown in a vat. A sister. A flesh-and-blood sister stolen from the cradle, raised in the frozen dark of black-ops black sites, trained from infancy to be an emotionless killer.
"She has Dante’s primary encryption drive," Claire said, her voice dropping into a deadly, ice-cold register. "If she reaches international waters, she has every shell corporation, every syndicate bank account, and every offshore naval weapon Dante ever bought."
"The helipad!" Sterling yelled. "Get to the rear flight deck! We have an SH-60 Seahawk touching down in two minutes. If you aren't on that bird, you sink with the ship!"

The screen blew out in a shower of sparks as a localized explosion ripped through the ceiling thirty feet ahead. Claire pulled Dante down as shrapnel ricocheted off the steel walls. Leo buried his face into her chest, letting out a sharp, terrified wail.
Through the curtain of fire, Claire saw the silhouette of her sister standing near the flight deck hatch, holding a detonator in one hand and Dante’s black titanium drive in the other.
