Chapter 41 - The Mirror’s Bullet: He Took the Round Meant for the Woman Who Carried His Child

The crack of the suppressed round was not a boom; it was a savage, tearing hiss that cleaved the stagnant air of the command bridge. Time snapped into crystalline fragments.
Claire didn’t think. Her combat instincts—honed through a decade of naval black-ops tours—screamed before the muzzle flash even died in the smoke. But she was holding Leo. She pivoted her torso instinctively, hunching her spine like an armored shell over the infant strapped against her chest.
She braced for the searing impact between her shoulder blades. It never came.
Instead, a mountain of muscle and custom-tailored Kevlar slammed across her vision. Dante Moretti lunged across the blood-slicked command console with a guttural roar, his body becoming an impenetrable wall between the muzzle and his family.
*Thwack.*
The hollow-point slug struck Dante dead-center in the right clavicle, punching through the reinforced lining of his tailored coat. The kinetic force threw the six-foot-four mafia don backward. He crashed hard against the auxiliary sonar station, sparks showering from shattered glass, his breath tearing from his lungs in a ragged gasp.
"Dante!" Claire screamed, the sound ripping raw from her throat.
Leo shrieked, his tiny fists gripping Claire’s tactical collar as the deafening violence erupted around them. Dante slid down the steel bulkhead, one hand pressing desperately against the crimson geyser soaking his pristine white shirt, his teeth bared in feral agony. "Claire... down!" he choked out, his vision swimming with dark edges. "Protect... the boy!"
At the shattered threshold of the bridge, the smoke curled away to reveal the intruder in terrifying, pristine clarity.
It was like looking into a cursed mirror.
The woman had Claire’s high, razor-sharp cheekbones. She had Claire’s piercing, storm-gray eyes. Even the small crescent scar near the hairline—a souvenir from a naval academy sparring match twenty years ago—was mirrored identically on the right temple. But while Claire’s face radiated fierce maternal fury, the woman standing in the doorway wore an expression of hollow, robotic detachment. Her tactical gear bore no insignia, only a pristine silver bar stamped with a barcode and three chilling words: *SUBJECT ZERO: CORA.*
"You're slow, sister," the double murmured, her voice an uncanny, pitch-perfect twin of Claire’s own vocal cords. "Ten years of nursing a syndicate prince softened your operational reflexes."
Cora racked the slide of her customized SIG Sauer, ejecting the spent casing with a sharp metallic clatter. She leveled the barrel once more—this time aimed straight between Claire’s eyes.
"Who the hell are you?" Claire hissed, stepping back into the shadow of the main radar terminal, her free hand drawing her combat blade from her utility harness. "Vance is bleeding to death behind you! The warheads are locked! You have no extraction!"
"Eleanor Vance was a petty bureaucrat who thought she bought a weapon," Cora replied calmly, her boot stepping over Eleanor’s twitching, half-dead body without a downward glance. "She didn't buy me, Claire. She *cloned* me. Or rather... she finished what the Department of Naval Intelligence abandoned twenty-four years ago."
Cora’s finger tightened on the trigger.
Behind the shattered console, Dante’s eyes snapped open. With an inhuman surge of adrenaline, his bloodied left hand grabbed a fallen assault rifle from the floor. He didn't have time to shoulder the weapon. He aimed from the hip, roaring through the blood filling his mouth, and pulled the trigger on full auto.
A blistering hail of 5.56mm rounds tore through the bulkhead, chewing into Cora’s side. The double spun, the impact knocking her off balance. Her round went wide, obliterating the overhead primary radar repeater in an explosion of sparks and falling glass. Cora rolled smoothly into the smoke, recovering with terrifying acrobatic grace, before sprinting down the companionway toward the lower flight decks.
Claire rushed to Dante’s side, dropping to her knees. Dante’s skin was turning the color of wet parchment, his pulse thumping erratically beneath her fingers.
"Dante, look at me!" she commanded, ripping open his shirt and shoving a combat gauze pack into the entrance wound. "Look at my eyes! You do not die here. Do you hear me? Not after everything!"
May you like
Dante coughed, crimson spattering his chin, but his trembling hand reached up, cupping the side of her face. His gaze shifted down to Leo, who was crying uncontrollably, his tiny fingers reaching down to touch his father’s blood-stained hand. The moment the baby’s fingers brushed Dante’s knuckles, Dante let out a shuddering, broken breath.
"Claire..." Dante wheezed, his fingers tightening against her cheek with surprising strength. "She... she took the override drive... The carrier's secondary core is overloading... We have six minutes before the reactor scuttles this vessel into the sea."
