Chapter 51 - The Doomsday Infant: When the Nuclear Silo Opened, the Baby Smiled at the Red Screen

The freezing waters of the East River churned into a violent vortex, swallowing the lower tier of the dry dock with a terrifying, hollow roar. Iron rivets groaned and sheared under thousands of tons of inward hydrostatic pressure. Sirens screamed an ear-splitting, pulsing rhythm that battered against the concrete cavern, drowned only by the synthesized, cold voice of the *Leviathan’s* automated fire-control system echoing through every rusted speaker:
`DOOMSDAY PROTOCOL: RESUMED. TARGET: WASHINGTON D.C. TIME TO IMPACT: TWO MINUTES, FORTY-FIVE SECONDS.`
"Claire! Move!" Dante Moretti’s voice was raw, shredded by smoke and adrenaline.
He didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy ballistic strap across Claire’s chest, pulling her toward the rusted steel emergency catwalk as water surged past their knees. Dante’s custom charcoal suit was torn, drenched in river scum and his own blood where shrapnel had grazed his ribs, yet his grip remained an unbreakable iron clamp. His dark eyes flickered between the swirling abyss below and the infant pressed firmly against Claire’s chest.
Little Leo was silent. The child, who had wept inconsolably for hours inside the fortified walls of the Moretti penthouse, was now unnervingly still. His wide, piercing sapphire eyes—the exact shade of Claire’s—were locked on the massive red digital launch array glowing beneath the churning water. His tiny lips curved into a soft, hypnotic smile as if the apocalyptic wailing of the siren was nothing more than a familiar lullaby.
"He's not just a child, Dante!" Claire gasped, her boots slipping on the slick metal rungs as they climbed. She held Leo tight with her left arm, her right hand white-knuckled on her suppressed tactical sidearm. "The voice cipher Jonathan tried to use was an adult key! But the system... the submarine's central core was keyed to his vocal frequency before he was even born! My sister didn't carry him to term—she was a host for the Syndicate’s ultimate bioweapon!"
"I don't give a damn whose bloodline or weapon program he belongs to," Dante growled through gritted teeth, kicking open the jammed latch of the observation deck. "He has your eyes. He breathed his first breath in my house. He is my son, and nobody fires a missile at this country under his name!"
From deep within the belly of the submerging leviathan, a mechanical screech tore through the air. The massive bow cap doors of torpedo tubes one and two were fully open. Bubbles of compressed nitrogen exploded to the surface, followed by the terrifying ignition whine of twin solid-fuel booster rockets warming their telemetry gyros.
"We can't stop the launch from this catwalk!" Claire shouted, looking down at the conning tower, which was now five feet below the walkway and dropping fast as the vessel prepared to dive into the deep channel of the Hudson Trench. "The bridge is sealed! Jonathan locked the blast hatch from inside!"
"Then we don't use the hatch," Dante said, his gaze turning deadly and cold.
He lunged toward the heavy harbor gantry crane parked on the overhead rail. The industrial machine was designed to load twenty-ton missile canisters into submarine hulls. A massive, solid-tungsten spreader bar dangled from its steel cables, swaying over the black water like the blade of a guillotine.
"Dante, what are you doing?!"
"The conning tower has an emergency escape trunk engineered with a manual pressure wedge," Dante shouted, smashing the glass of the crane's operator cabin with the butt of his sidearm. He hotwired the ignition switches in a spray of sparks. "If I drop fifty tons of steel directly onto the upper shear pin, it will crush the conning tower's exterior housing and blow the secondary ballast seals! The sub won't be able to dive!"
"And you'll crush the bridge! Jonathan will die!"
"I am counting on it!" Dante roared, slamming the hydraulic levers forward.
The crane’s massive diesel engine sputtered, roared, and belched a thick plume of black exhaust into the vaulted ceiling. The iron winch screamed. High above the churning foam, the forty-ton spreader bar lurched, swinging directly over the conning tower of the vanishing submarine.
Beneath Claire’s vest, baby Leo reached out his small, dimpled hand toward the glass of the crane cabin.
"D-Dante..." the infant cooed.
The mafia billionaire froze for a fraction of a second. His hardened jaw trembled. He looked through the shattered glass at the baby boy who had looked upon death and called him by name.
`LAUNCH IN ONE MINUTE, THIRTY SECONDS. FIRING SOLUTION LOCKED.`
"Forgive me, Claire," Dante whispered. He jammed the hydraulic release to zero.

The forty-ton tungsten block plummeted straight down into the black water.
