Chapter 56 - The Washington Blackout: When the Sky Turned Red Above the Capitol

Before the sniper could squeeze the trigger, a blinding blue flash lit up the entire southern horizon.

The diverted missile from the *Leviathan* had not detonated at sea level. Claire’s abort code had forced the rocket to dump its main propellant in the stratosphere, triggering an uncontained secondary EMP burst forty miles above the Mid-Atlantic coast.

A soundless, invisible wave of electromagnetic fury swept across the Eastern seaboard at the speed of light.

Instantly, the blinding searchlight of the hovering MH-53 helicopter flickered, turned orange, and died. The aircraft's digital cockpit displays went completely black. The massive turbine engines let out a violent cough of backfiring blue flame as their digital fuel injection controllers were fried to cinder.

"Mayday! Mayday! System failure!" the pilot screamed, his voice faintly audible over the grinding mechanical screech of dying rotors.

The lead helicopter swung violently out of control, its tail rotor failing completely. It spun two full circles in the air before banking hard toward the open waters of the East River, crashing with a titanic splash that sent waves crashing over the docks.

Across the water, the glittering skyline of Manhattan vanished.

One by one, the lights of the Empire State Building, Wall Street, the Brooklyn Bridge, and every streetlamp from Harlem to Battery Park were snuffed out like candles in a hurricane. A terrifying, absolute darkness swallowed the greatest metropolis on earth.

Sirens throughout the city wailed once and died as the municipal power grid collapsed entirely.

"Move!" Dante yelled, the shock of the revelation instantly buried under his fierce survival instinct.

He grabbed Claire’s arm, pulling her into the shadowy labyrinth of the decommissioned dry dock warehouse. The second and third Syndicate helicopters were struggling to maintain autorotation, their emergency analog systems barely keeping them airborne as they scattered into the foggy night.

"Are you hit?!" Dante demanded, backing into the pitch-black alcove of a reinforced concrete munitions bunker.

"No," Claire panted, her back pressed against the cold stone, holding Leo tight against her chest.

In the complete darkness, the only light came from the faint glow of Dante’s mechanical Swiss wristwatch and the eerie, luminous blue reflections in baby Leo’s eyes.

Dante reached out in the dark. His calloused fingers found Claire’s jaw, lifting her face until her eyes met his. Despite the darkness, she could feel the burning intensity of his gaze—a mixture of agonizing sorrow, raw fury, and an overwhelming, possessive protection.

"You knew," Dante whispered, his thumb brushing a drop of blood from her lip. "Every time you looked at me in that house... every time you watched me hold him... you saw your sister."

"I saw the man she loved enough to die for," Claire answered, her voice breaking. "Sofia... Evelyn... she knew the Syndicate was coming for her the moment she discovered she was pregnant. She staged the crash in Amalfi to draw the assassins away from you. She gave birth to Leo in a black site in Virginia, and when they poisoned her... she made me swear an oath."

Claire reached into Dante’s pocket and placed her hand over his heart.

"She told me: *'Take my son to Dante. He will burn the world before he lets them touch him.'*"

Dante’s breathing hitched. A single tear rolled down the billionaire's rugged, bloodied cheek, instantly lost in the soot and rain.

He didn't speak. He simply pulled Claire and the baby into his arms, crushing them against his chest in an embrace so fierce, so absolute, that all the armies of the Syndicate could not have torn them apart.

Beneath them, baby Leo placed his small hands on Dante’s collar, clutching the torn fabric of his father's coat, and closed his eyes in peaceful, untroubled sleep.

"They're coming, Dante," Claire whispered against his shoulder. "The EMP will only buy us an hour. The Syndicate has ground teams already staged in Manhattan. With the grid down, the city belongs to them."

Dante pulled back, his eyes hardening into twin shards of volcanic glass.

"No," Dante Moretti said, his voice dropping into a deadly, gravelly register that made the hair on Claire’s arms stand up. "The city doesn't belong to them."

He reached to his tactical belt, pulling a heavy brass flare gun from an emergency survival kit.

"Manhattan belongs to the Moretti family. And tonight, we paint it red."
