Chapter 86 - The Sovereign’s Ultimatum: The Crown of Glass

Dante’s finger froze on the trigger. The veins on his forearms bulged, his knuckles whitening with pure, agonizing rage. "You monstrous bastard."
"I am a visionary!" Salvatore barked, his voice finally losing its velvet veneer and cracking with terrifying intensity. "Look at the world out there, Dante! Wars fought for oil, politicians bought for pennies, economies teetering on the edge of collapse! For fifty years, the Moretti family ruled the shadows. But with these boys—with their bio-neural interface slaved to the kinetic defense satellites orbiting above this planet—we will not merely rule the shadows. We will govern the earth."
Salvatore turned his gaze to Claire. "Your mother knew this power. That’s why she fled. She was terrified of the gods we were engineering. But you, Claire... you have the fire she lacked. You fought through an entire fleet to keep these children alive. You are worthy to be the matriarch of this empire."
Salvatore extended his hands toward the infants strapped to Claire’s chest. "Give them to me. Stand beside Dante as the queen of the new world. Or watch Elena initiate the harvest protocol, and we will extract their neural cores manually."
From the shadows of the laboratory, a dozen automated heavy combat turrets descended from the high ceiling, their red targeting reticles painting Dante’s chest and Claire’s forehead in lethal crimson dots.
"You have ten seconds, Dante," Salvatore commanded, cold satisfaction dripping from his lips. "Kneel before the bloodline, or watch your family be erased."
Claire looked down at the twin boys. Leo was staring up at her, his hazel eyes wide and bright. He didn't look afraid. In fact, his tiny hand reached out, grabbing the corner of the silver pendant hanging from Claire’s neck—the pendant Dante had given her weeks ago, containing the encrypted micro-drive of his mother’s final diary.
Beside the pendant, pinned to her blood-soaked vest, was the battered plastic hospital credential: *CLAIRE VANCE - ID #9042-ALPHA.*
Claire’s eyes widened.
*ID #9042-ALPHA.*
The number was not a hospital registry. It was the exact numerical sequence inscribed on the central mainframe terminal resting twenty feet behind Salvatore.
Her mother hadn't fled empty-handed. Her mother had encoded the shutdown sequence into Claire’s very identity.

"Dante," Claire whispered, her voice devoid of fear, filled only with absolute, terrifying resolve. "Forgive me."
