Chapter 36 - The DNA Cipher: The Doctor Who Stole Her Memories Begged for Mercy Before the Trigger Pulled

The medical bay inside the USS *Acheron* hummed with the steady, reassuring vibration of the thorium reactor three decks below. The air was sterile, smelling of ozone, antiseptic, and cold iron.

Leo lay inside an advanced pediatric hyperbaric chamber, surrounded by gentle amber light. Transparent IV lines delivered synthetic nutrients directly into his tiny veins, while an array of monitors tracked his vitals. The erratic, dangerous fluctuations in his heart rate had finally stabilized; his breathing was rhythmic, deep, and peaceful.

Claire stood before the glass, her hand pressed against the transparent barrier, watching her son sleep.

Beside her, a trembling man in a stained white laboratory coat was tied to a steel observation chair. His face was bruised, his glasses hanging by a single hinge. Dr. Marcus Webb, the former chief medical director of the Siren Project, had spent the last fifteen years hiding in the belly of this ghost vessel, thinking the outside world had forgotten him.

Dante stood behind the doctor’s chair, his hands resting casually on Webb’s shoulders. The grip looked gentle, but the sheer downward pressure was causing the older man's collarbones to creak.

"Tell her what you did, Doctor," Dante whispered into Webb's ear, his voice dripping with venom. "Tell her before I start removing your fingers one joint at a time."

"I had no choice!" Webb wept, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "Eleanor held the kill switch for everyone on this boat! She ordered the procedure eight months before Claire was assigned to the domestic fleet!"

Claire didn't turn around. Her voice was terrifyingly calm. "What procedure, Marcus?"

Webb swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically between Dante’s stone-cold expression and the silent fury of the female commander before him.

"You weren't just assigned to that private clinic to watch over Dante Moretti’s baby, Claire," Webb gasped. "You went there because your body was drawn to him. The child... the child didn't come from a surrogate in Milan, as Dante was told."

Dante’s hands tightened on the doctor’s shoulders with enough force to draw a scream from the man. "Speak clearly, Webb, or I swear to God you won't survive the next breath."

"The ovum was harvested from Claire five years ago during her deep-dive medical clearance!" Webb shrieked, tears streaming down his cheeks. "Eleanor combined it with the Moretti genetic sequence retrieved from Dante's father’s estate! Dante... the woman who carried your child to term was a clinical decoy! Claire is Leo's biological mother! She gave birth to him in a black facility outside Zurich, and Eleanor wiped her memories with an experimental neuro-blocker!"

Claire’s breath hitched.

The entire world seemed to stop spinning. The humming reactor, the cold steel beneath her boots, the scent of the sea—everything dissolved into absolute, blinding white noise.

She turned slowly, her eyes wide, staring at the infant through the glass.

The immediate, irrational pull she had felt the moment she laid eyes on him in that clinic. The way his frantic, inconsolable crying had ceased the second she picked him up. The way his tiny fingers had curled around her name tag, as if his soul recognized the one person who had given him life.

It hadn't been professional maternal instinct. It had been the undeniable, unbreakable bond of blood.

Dante stepped back from the doctor, his own face utterly drained of color. The ruthless mafia don who had executed dozens of rivals without flinching stood paralyzed, looking at Claire as if seeing the universe stripped bare.

"Claire..." Dante breathed, his voice raw, stripped of all authority, containing only a profound, shattering awe. "He's... he's yours. He was always yours."

Claire looked up at him, her gray eyes burning with a mixture of immense love and apocalyptic fury. She looked back at Webb.

Webb was sobbing now, rambling hysterically. "Eleanor needed both your lineages combined! The Moretti gene carries the authorization code; the Ellison gene carries the targeting protocol! Leo is the only being on Earth whose biometrics can unlock the Leviathan network! Please... Claire, I saved his life in the lab! I kept the sequence stable! You have to show mercy!"

Claire walked over to the chair. She didn't shout. She didn't curse.

She smoothly unholstered Dante's pistol from her hip, pressed the cold muzzle against the center of Webb’s forehead, and cocked the hammer.

"Mercy," Claire whispered, her voice dropping into an arctic chill, "died the moment you took my baby from my arms."
