Chapter 26 - The Black Box of Callao: The Dead Man Who Left His Empire in Her Hands

A single suppressed shot cracked through the storm from the overhead crane derrick.
The mercenary holding the remote detonator collapsed instantly, a neat black hole drilled through his forehead before his nervous system could even send a signal to his thumb. Dante Moretti dropped from the overhead gantry like a vengeful demon, his combat knife flashing in the amber light as he took down the second guard before the body hit the floor.
"Fire! Kill them!" Vance shrieked, scrambling backward.
Chaos erupted across the platform.
The SEAL team breached from three separate entry points, their suppressed automatic weapons delivering devastating, surgical fire. The mercenaries, trained as private security rather than frontline combatants, broke within seconds under the sheer brutality of naval special warfare tactics.
Claire didn't run. She didn't dive for cover.
She turned her back to the gunfire, shielding Leo entirely with her body and her heavy armor plate. Bullets ricocheted off the steel stanchions behind her with vicious clangs, but her hands holding the child never wavered. She stroked the back of Leo's neck with her gloved thumb, humming softly against the roar of combat.
Dante advanced through the smoke like a juggernaut, his pistol emptying with lethal precision into the remaining contractors until the slide locked back empty.
Paul Vance, scrambling on his hands and knees toward the helipad ladder, was suddenly hoisted into the air by the collar of his trench coat. Dante slammed him violently against the metal bulkhead, his fingers crushing Vance's windpipe with bone-splintering force.
"Where is the master ledger?" Dante growled, his face inches from Vance's purple, gasping face. "The names of every officer who helped Julian infiltrate my family!"
"It's... it's in the box..." Vance choked out, clawing at Dante's iron grip. "The black box... beneath the moon pool terminal... Julian set it to broadcast to the global syndicate network if he died..."
Dante dropped him like a sack of garbage onto the wet steel deck. Vance gasped for air, clutching his bruised throat, only to look up and see Claire standing above him.
Leo was resting quietly against her shoulder, his wide, dark eyes staring curiously at the fallen man.
Claire knelt down beside the primary control terminal. Mounted beneath the console was a heavy, waterproof flight recorder—a black box forged from depleted uranium alloy, bearing the classified seal of the United States Naval Undersea Warfare Center.
"Miller," Claire spoke into her tactical comms. "I'm looking at the Callao black box. It has an active transmission array tied to an orbital uplink."
*"Admiral!"* Miller’s voice crackled back with intense urgency. *"The data stream isn't just transmitting to syndicate nodes—it's routing through a classified server cluster inside the Pentagon! Julian Vance wasn't running this alone! There is a sitting member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff authorized on that encryption key!"*
Claire’s eyes hardened. The conspiracy wasn't a rogue splinter faction. It went straight to the very top of the military hierarchy in Washington. Julian Vance had been the middleman between the American criminal underworld and corrupt flag officers orchestrating multi-billion-dollar ghost operations.
"Can you shut down the launch sequence for the deep-sea drone?" Dante asked, stepping up behind her, his eyes drifting down to Leo. His broad hand reached out, gently, reverently touching his son's soft cheek. Leo blinked, recognized his father's deep voice, and reached out one small hand to grasp Dante's thumb.
A tear spilled down Dante’s battle-hardened face, vanishing into the rain.
"I can abort the torpedo launch," Claire said, her fingers flying across the biometric terminal. She placed her right palm flat against the glass while holding Leo securely with her left arm.
The console beeped once. A green ring of light pulsed outward from her hand.
`BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED: REAR ADMIRAL CLAIRE ELLISON.`
`AUTHORITY LEVEL: O-8 / STRATCOM BLACK.`
`ABORTING PAYLOAD LAUNCH IN 3... 2... 1...`
`PAYLOAD SAFED. DRONE DOCKED.`
A long, heavy hiss of venting hydraulic pressure echoed from the moon pool as the black titanium drone settled safely back into its cradle.
"It's over," Dante whispered, exhaling a breath he felt like he had been holding for months.
"No," Claire said, pulling a specialized military decryption drive from her pocket and jamming it into the black box’s maintenance port. The screen flickered as gigabytes of encrypted financial transactions, treasonous naval orders, and offshore accounts began dumping into her drive. "It's not over. Look at the signature authorizing Julian Vance's deep-sea access."
Dante leaned over her shoulder, reading the glowing text on the monitor.
His jaw dropped.
`AUTHORIZED BY: VICE ADMIRAL ROBERT STERLING — DEPUTY CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS.`
"Sterling..." Dante murmured, his voice laced with disbelief. "Sterling was the man who oversaw the investigation into my family five years ago. He was the one who forced my father out of the shipping docks."
"Sterling didn't want to destroy the Moretti syndicate," Claire said, her voice dropping into a deadly, calculating chill. "He wanted to own it. And now that Julian failed, Sterling is about to wipe every trace of this platform from the face of the earth."

Suddenly, the radar alarm on Claire's wrist gauntlet began to screech in high-frequency panic.
*"Admiral! Break away! Break away now!"* Commander Miller screamed through the comms. *"Multiple incoming anti-ship cruise missiles detected! Launch source: an unidentified submarine sixty miles offshore! Impact in two minutes!"*
