Chapter 49 - The Syndicate’s True Master: The Voice on the Speaker Was Not a Ghost, but a Living Legend

The heavy crimson beam of the sniper's laser rested unsteadily on the center of Leo’s tiny blue onesie.

The operative holding the child was a massive, scarred Russian mercenary—one of the legendary "Ghost Wolves" of the Siberian black sites. His massive hand held Leo securely against his armor, while his other hand held a suppressed pistol pressed against the baby’s temple.

"Put them down," Jonathan Ellison commanded, his voice echoing through the claustrophobic luxury of the train car. "Slowly. Fingers off the triggers."

Claire looked at her son. Her chest heaved with violent, suffocating terror. Leo wasn't crying. The infant was looking around at the red glow of the laser beams with wide, curious eyes. When he saw Claire, his face lit up with a toothless, joyous smile.

"Mama!" the baby cooed, reaching out his tiny hands.

A tear spilled down Claire’s cheek, cutting through the soot and gunpowder. Slowly, agonizingly, she lowered her rifle to the mahogany floor. Dante, his jaw clenched so hard his molars were grinding, placed his Desert Eagle beside her boots.

Cora, however, did not lower her weapon.

"Cora, don't!" Claire cried out. "He'll shoot him!"

"Subject Zero," Jonathan Ellison ordered, his voice taking on a hypnotic, rhythmic cadence. "Code sequence: *Iron, Horizon, Blackout.* Stand down and execute Dante Moretti."

Cora’s eyes glazed over for a fraction of a second. Her muscles locked. The neural conditioning planted twenty years ago in the depths of a clandestine laboratory fought against her will, demanding obedience to the master voice.

Her gun slowly shifted from Jonathan toward Dante’s head.

"Cora! Fight it!" Claire begged, stepping toward her sister. "You're an Ellison! You are not his machine!"

Cora’s teeth were gritted so violently that blood began to seep from her gums. Her hand shook wildly. "I... cannot... stop it..." she gasped out, tears of agony spilling from her eyes.

"Yes, you can," Dante said quietly, his voice steady as a tombstone. He didn't look at Cora’s gun. He looked directly at the Russian mercenary holding his son. "Because you know what happens when you touch a Moretti's blood."

Suddenly, from the darkness outside the train car, a new sound resonated through the tunnel.

It wasn't gunfire.

It was the deep, rhythmic, terrifying tolling of an antique church bell.

A hidden intercom system mounted inside the rail tunnel crackled to life, broadcasting a voice that made Jonathan Ellison’s smug smile vanish in an instant. The voice was ancient, raspy, yet carried the terrifying authority of an emperor who had commanded armies from the shadows for sixty years.

*"You always were an arrogant fool, Jonathan,"* the voice rumbled through the speakers.

Jonathan Ellison went dead white. The scotch glass slipped from his fingers, shattering across the polished floor.

"No..." Jonathan whispered, taking a stumbling step back. "That's impossible. You died in Palermo thirty years ago!"

Dante’s lips curled into a cold, terrifying smile of supreme vengeance.

"My grandfather doesn't die, Jonathan," Dante murmured. "He just waits for the rats to gather in one room."
