Chapter 54 - The Cradle of the Abyss: A Mother’s Voice Against the Warhead’s Ignition

"Protocol Zero: Cradle."

Claire's voice was low, melodic, and devoid of fear. It was the soft, terrifying whisper of a mother humming a lullaby over an open grave.

The Leviathan’s massive supercomputer processed the acoustic sequence in fractions of a nanosecond. Across the entire length of the four-hundred-foot submarine, thousands of fiber-optic cables pulsed with a blinding ultraviolet light.

`OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.`

`IDENTITY: EVELYN CLAIRE REED.`

`STATUS: SOVEREIGN ARCHITECT.`

`PURGING TARGET COORDINATES: WASHINGTON D.C. ERASED.`

"No!" Jonathan Ellison howled, his bloodied hands scratching claw-marks into the flooded steel decking. "No! The Syndicate will slaughter you! They will track you to the ends of the earth!"

`ABORTING MAIN ROCKET IGNITION.`

`WARNING: BOOSTER STAGE ONE FUEL HAS ALREADY MIXED. CATSTROPHIC OVERPRESSURE IN TUBE ONE.`

"The missile won't fire at the city," Claire realized with chilling clarity, "it's going to detonate right here in the tube!"

The solid fuel within the sealed canister had already reached ignition temperature. Without an exit vector, the pressure inside Torpedo Tube One was spiking exponentially toward a catastrophic hull rupture. The resulting blast would level five city blocks of the Brooklyn waterfront and vaporize everything within a quarter-mile radius—including Dante and Leo.

Claire didn't waste a second. She turned away from Jonathan Ellison, leaving the traitor pinned under the twisted steel as the black water rose over his chest.

She vaulted up the ladder, her hands tearing against the jagged metal edges of the ruptured conning tower. She burst through the escaping steam into the cold river air, coughing violently as the smell of burning propellant filled her lungs.

"Dante! The tube is going to rupture!" she screamed.

On the catwalk above, Dante was already moving. He had strapped baby Leo securely against his broad chest with a Kevlar harness, holding an M4 carbine in one hand and a thick nautical mooring cable in the other.

"Take my hand!" Dante roared over the deafening whine of the pressurizing warhead.

Claire leaped from the slick hull toward the lower rungs of the maintenance catwalk. Her fingers barely caught the rusted bar. Below her, the entire submarine began to vibrate with a high-pitched, screaming tremor—the sound of titanium hull plates stretching beyond their tensile limit.

Dante dropped to his knees on the catwalk, leaning dangerously over the void. He didn't drop his weapon—he slung it, throwing both of his massive, calloused hands down and locking his grip around Claire’s wrists.

With a primal roar of sheer physical power, Dante hoisted her upward, swinging her over the rail just as a brilliant, blinding flash of orange fire erupted beneath the black water.

*BOOM!*

The shockwave hit them like a freight train. The water in the dry dock blew upward in a five-story wall of boiling spray and shrapnel. The entire steel catwalk was ripped from its concrete anchor bolts, swinging wildly in the air like a broken pendulum.

Dante wrapped his entire body around Claire and Leo, using his own back and ballistic armor as a human shield against the rain of burning metal and concrete chunks. A piece of jagged steel plate slammed into Dante’s left shoulder, tearing through his Kevlar and drawing a sharp, hissed curse from his lips, but he did not let go of them. Not even for a millimeter.

They slammed against the stone wall of the upper dry dock terrace, tumbling into the mud and gravel of the secure compound.

Behind them, the *Leviathan* settled into its watery grave, its hull split down the center, burning with an eerie underwater blue flame as the emergency fire suppression systems flooded the reactor compartment.

Silence descended upon the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The apocalyptic wail of the sirens died out, replaced only by the crackle of burning debris and the distant, muffled echoes of citywide car alarms across the river in Manhattan.

Claire pushed herself up, her face covered in soot, blood dripping from a cut above her eyebrow. Her trembling hands immediately reached for Leo.

The baby was tucked safely against Dante’s chest. The child blinked, wiped a speck of dust from his nose with a chubby hand, and let out a tiny, soft sneeze.

Then, looking up into Dante’s bloodied, soot-covered face, Leo giggled.

Dante let out a long, shuddering breath that sounded like a broken prayer. He leaned his forehead against Claire’s, his hand resting tenderly on the back of the baby’s neck.

"We did it," Dante whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion the ruthless mafia kingpin had never shown another living soul. "We stopped it."

"No," Claire said, looking up toward the southern sky where the stars were masked by unnatural, swirling gray clouds. "We only stopped the first strike."

High above them, through the dense fog rolling off the Atlantic Ocean, the low, rhythmic thumping of heavy rotor blades began to vibrate in their chests.
