Chapter 15 - Suite 504

The lobby of the Historic Jefferson Hotel was magnificent, adorned with grand marble pillars, sweeping grand staircases, and glowing stained-glass ceilings.

It was the exact kind of high-society luxury Margaret Ellison had spent her entire life trying to project.

At 11:30 PM, Claire walked through the heavy revolving doors, followed closely by Sarah Vance and four plainclothes Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents.

Sarah looked pale, her teeth clenched in silent fury at her uncle’s betrayal of the uniform.

"Room 504," Sarah whispered to Claire, holding an encrypted tracking device.

"Julian’s laptop terminal is currently active."

"He’s transmitting data right now to an offshore server in Zurich."

"Then we don't have time to wait for local law enforcement warrants," Claire said, pulling a tactical master access card from her coat pocket.

"NCIS has federal authority over active naval intelligence breaches."

"We move now."

They rode the elevator to the fifth floor in complete silence.

The long carpeted hallway was dead quiet, save for the faint hum of air conditioning units.

They stopped outside Suite 504.

Claire signaled the two NCIS agents to take positions on either side of the heavy oak door.

She swiped the master key card through the electronic lock.

The light flashed green with a soft click.

Claire kicked the door open, stepping inside with her weapon drawn and trained on the room.

"Naval Intelligence! Nobody move!" Claire’s voice echoed like thunder inside the suite.

Inside the opulent sitting room, Margaret Ellison was lounge-seated on a velvet sofa, holding a glass of expensive red wine.

Across from her sat Julian Vance, a silver-haired man in a sleek dark suit, operating a heavily modified military-grade laptop on the coffee table.

Margaret gasped, dropping her wine glass.

The glass shattered across the white rug, red liquid blooming like a pool of blood.

"Claire?!" Margaret screamed, her voice reaching a shrill, terrifying pitch.

"What are you doing here?! How dare you burst into my room with guns!"

Julian Vance didn't scream.

His eyes narrowed as he instantly recognized Claire’s face from defense directory files.

He made a sudden, aggressive move to slam his laptop shut and destroy the hard drive.

"Don't touch that deck!" Sarah Vance yelled, rushing into the room and training her sidearm straight at her uncle’s head.

Julian froze, his fingers hovering an inch above the keyboard.

He looked up, seeing his niece’s cold, unforgiving eyes.

"Sarah?" Julian rasped, a sickening grin touching his lips.

"Look at you... playing hero for the Captain."

"Shut your mouth, Julian," Sarah snarled, her weapon steady as rock.

"Step away from the console with your hands behind your head!"

Margaret sat frozen on the sofa, her face twisted in utter disbelief and terror as NCIS agents swarmed the suite, pinning Julian to the floor and slamming handcuffs around his wrists.

"What is going on?!" Margaret shrieked, looking frantically between Claire and the federal agents.

"Julian! Tell them who I am! Tell them my late husband was Admiral Thomas Ellison!"

Claire walked slowly over to the sofa, looking down at her mother-in-law with an expression of cold, unadulterated contempt.

"He knows who your husband was, Margaret," Claire said softly.

"In fact, that’s the only reason he used you."

"You were nothing more than a useful idiot with a stolen password."
