Chapter 53 - The Seven-Minute President: The White House Situation Room Went Dark the Second the Child Spoke

Three hundred miles south, beneath the West Wing of the White House, the air inside the subterranean Situation Room smelled of scorched electronics and cold sweat.

The giant digital projection wall, normally displaying the real-time global deployment of every carrier strike group, had dissolved into static. Over seventy senior military officials, intelligence directors, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff sat frozen in their leather chairs, staring at the lone flickering crimson window in the center of the main display.

`UNKNOWN SUBMERSIBLE LAUNCH DETECTED: HUDSON BASIN.`

`MISSILE CLASS: TRIDENT-D5 LEVIATHAN VARIANT.`

`ESTIMATED FLIGHT TIME TO ZERO POINT: 2 MINUTES, 10 SECONDS.`

`TARGET: DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA METROPOLITAN AREA.`

"Where is the President?!" Admiral Vance shouted, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. "Why haven't the NORAD interceptors in McGuire scrambled?!"

"Sir! Joint Base McGuire is completely dark!" a young Air Force lieutenant cried, his trembling hands flying across a dead keyboard. "An acoustic pulse swept up the eastern seaboard five minutes ago! Every military satellite network from Maine to Virginia has been hijacked! It’s not an external hack... the launch command was authenticated using the Chairman’s own Level-Omega emergency codes!"

"The Chairman is dead!" Vance roared. "He had a heart attack two hours ago! Who authenticated the order?!"

The lieutenant turned pale, his screen reflecting an eerie, impossible line of biometric text that had bypassed seventeen firewalls:

`AUTHORIZATION SOURCE: COMMANDER LEO MORETTI.`

`AGE: 8 MONTHS.`

`GENETIC IDENTIFIER: PROJECT LEVIATHAN ALPHA SPECIMEN.`

The entire room went dead silent. You could hear the hum of the auxiliary air scrubbers and the frantic ticking of the master launch clocks.

"My God..." General Marcus whispered, his face ashen. "The Moretti baby. The rumors out of the Seventh Fleet... they weren't an urban legend. The Syndicate actually pulled it off. They synthesized the Admiral's genetics with the operative’s..."

"Shoot it down!" the Deputy Secretary of Defense screamed, rising from his chair. "I don't care if a baby authorized it, I don't care if God himself authorized it! Fire the THAAD batteries from Fort Meade!"

"Sir, we can't!" the weapons officer sobbed in sheer terror. "The interceptor guidance chips are controlled by Moretti Aerospace! Dante Moretti locked the defense grid twenty minutes ago!"

Meanwhile, on the shattered bridge of the submarine, Claire stood over the bleeding form of Jonathan Ellison.

"You knew," Claire whispered, her voice dangerously steady despite the chaos around her. "You knew the failsafe required Leo's death."

"The boy was never meant to live, Claire!" Jonathan gasped, blood bubbling at the corners of his lips. "He was a living ignition key! Once the key turns the lock, you throw it away! The Council will rebuild a new America from the ashes, and your precious Dante Moretti will be remembered as the terrorist who burned the capital!"

`COUNTDOWN: TWENTY-FIVE SECONDS.`

"Then the Council made a fatal mistake," Claire said coldly.

"What mistake?!" Jonathan hissed.

"They assumed Leo's voiceprint was the only one tied to Project Leviathan," Claire said.

She holstered her weapon, took a deep breath, and knelt before the master biometric interface. She didn't press her hand to the scanner. Instead, she tore off the silver pendant hanging from her neck—the one Dante had given her—and crushed the outer casing between two fingers. Inside the silver locket was not a jewel, but a micro-optical chip preserved in bio-gel.

She inserted the chip directly into the maintenance data port of the terminal.

The red screens flickered violently. The sirens paused for half a second.

`SECONDARY BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE DETECTED.`

`MATCHING RETINAL AND VOCAL MATRIX: COMMANDER EVELYN REED [PROJECT FOUNDER].`

`CONFLICT DETECTED: CREATOR VERSUS WEAPON.`

"Evelyn?!" Jonathan gasped, his eyes widening in pure, unadulterated terror. "No... Evelyn died in the Callao trench! You're Claire! You're just her shell! Her surrogate!"

Claire leaned down, inches from Jonathan’s dying face, her eyes burning with lethal fury.

"My sister may have died in Callao, Jonathan," Claire whispered with ice in her voice. "But she left her memories inside me. And I remember everything you did."

May you like

She leaned toward the microphone and spoke three words that shattered the submarine's central mainframe into digital ash.
