Chapter 96 - Audio Logs of Dayton

Miller and Dawson fanned out, sweeping the consoles with disciplined precision, but the vast control theater was entirely devoid of life. Only the hum of mainframe processors and the flickering amber glow of cathode-ray tubes broke the stillness.
"Secure the exits, Dawson," Miller ordered quietly, never lowering his weapon. "Captain, the terminal is waiting for input."
I stepped to the main dais, looking down at a brass console where a keyboard sat framed in polished walnut. A green phosphor cursor blinked rhythmically against the black screen beneath a single command line: *PLAY LOG 01-A.*
I hit the return key.
The tape drives on the port bulkhead spun violently, the magnetic ribbon whirring across the playback heads before settling into a smooth cadence. My father’s voice filled the room again, stripped of the brittle rage he had shown during his trial, sounding calm, calculated, and terrifyingly cold.
*"Eleanor, if you are listening to this from beneath the keel of a warship, it means the uniform did not wash away the bloodline.*
*"When you took that commission in Annapolis, your mother threw a crystal decanter through the bay window in the Oakwood library. She wept because she thought you were a traitor. But I was not angry, Eleanor. I was terrified.*
*"For forty years, our family told the socialites of Ohio and the inspectors of the Department of Defense that we were mere industrialists. We allowed them to believe we were greedy, self-absorbed aristocrats who cared only for golf clubs and municipal influence. It was the safest lie we ever constructed.*
*"Because if the Pentagon ever realized what we retained from Project Thalassa, they would not have audited us. They would have executed us for treason.*
*"Thalassa was never intended to be an acoustic listening post. It is an active global resonance network. Embedded in this facility are seventy-two solid-state acoustic emitters tied directly to the mid-Atlantic tectonic plates. A single low-frequency sequence can trigger localized seismic events along any coastline bordering this ocean.*
*"We built an unwritten treaty with the world’s shadow markets. The wealth that bought your childhood, Eleanor, was not dividends from steel or aircraft components. It was insurance money. Nations paid us to ensure the ocean stayed calm.*

*"Now, the network has detected a critical anomaly. Sterling was merely a tool used by our foreign partners to force the archive open. If you are here, you must make a choice. Accept the legacy of Dayton—or let the pressure collapse everything we built."*
The audio log clicked off with a hollow pop, leaving an unbearable silence hanging over the theater.
