Chapter 74 - The Shadow Network

The quantum drive was never simply a navigation device; it was the master decryption key to the deep-state black budget network that Vance and the Dayton syndicate had spent thirty years constructing. As our inductive tap latched onto the underwater comms array extending from the belly of the *Dauntless*, terabytes of classified transmissions flooded into our makeshift display.
Names, dates, offshore logistics conduits, and bank account numbers scrolled across the monochrome screen in a luminous cascade of treason. Every contract signed in Dayton, every kickback routed through shell companies in Delaware and Zurich, every sabotaged sea trial that had cost young sailors their lives—it was all laid bare in Vance’s private encryption algorithm.
"Captain," Chen gasped, pointing to an incoming transmission routed directly from the Pentagon's deepest bunker. "Look at the routing header."
It was a flash-priority message addressed directly to Admiral Vance, originating from the Secretary of Defense’s private staff.
*Operation Leviathan concluded. Terminate salvage protocol immediately if target hull is non-recoverable. Proceed to Coordinates Tango-Seven for extraction of political assets. Civilian clean-up underway in Dayton.*
My breath caught in my throat. Civilian clean-up.
I leaned over the terminal, my blood running cold despite the freezing air in the compartment. "Bring up the Dayton domestic intercept feed right now. Filter for my family name. Filter for Oakwood."
Chen’s fingers flew over the keyboard. A series of recorded domestic wiretaps crackled to life over my headset. The first voice I heard was not a stranger’s. It was my mother’s sister, Aunt Claire—the very woman who had spat upon my uniform, who had sneered at my promotion, who had told me that a daughter of Dayton had no business wearing the eagle and the stars.
*"He promised us full immunity!"* Claire’s voice was hysterical, recorded less than an hour ago. *"Richard promised the money would clear into the trust account the moment Eleanor was eliminated! You said the Navy would call it an operational training accident! Why are federal marshals outside the gate?!"*

A cold, unfamiliar voice had replied on the tape: *"Admiral Vance has renegotiated the terms of the settlement, Mrs. Vance-Holloway. Loose threads do not receive pensions."*
A gunshot echoed through the recording, followed by the dull thud of a body hitting a polished hardwood floor. Then the line went dead.
