Chapter 40 - The Final Whisper

"Drop your weapons!" Sullivan roared, his laser sight painting the chest of the contractor on the left.

The air in the room was electric, stretched to the absolute breaking point. A single twitch of a finger would trigger a bloodbath in the confined steel quarters.

Vice Admiral Sterling held up a hand, motioning his guards to hold their fire. His uniform was in disarray, his silver hair disheveled, but his eyes burned with an icy, manic malice.

"Put the guns down, Sullivan," Sterling sighed, leaning back against the mahogany table. "Your Commander doesn't know what she’s gotten herself into. She thinks this is about money. She thinks this is about her pathetic family in Dayton."

"It's over, Sterling," I said, stepping past Sullivan, my weapon locked dead center on the Vice Admiral's chest. "We have the physical cargo in your holds. We have Vance's testimony. We have the complete financial trail from Kevin's dummy accounts."

Sterling let out a soft, mocking laugh that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Kevin? Arthur? They were flies on the wall, Eleanor. Useful idiots who thought they were building an empire because they were desperate to prove they were better than you." Sterling leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, fixing me with an unblinking gaze. "Do you really think I chose your family’s machine shop by accident?"

The room seemed to drop ten degrees. My finger remained rigid on the trigger, but my chest tightened. "What are you talking about?"

"I didn't pick your father because he was a good machinist," Sterling whispered, his voice dripping with venom. "I picked him because he asked for it. Twenty years ago, Arthur Whitaker came to Washington looking for a way to ruin your naval career before it even started. He didn't want a daughter who outperformed his son. He made a deal with our syndicate to sabotage your initial security clearance."

My heart hammered against my ribs, a cold knot forming in my stomach.

"Arthur sold you out before you ever set foot on an academy ship, Eleanor," Sterling sneered, his lips curving into a horrific smile. "And right now, as we speak, Arthur just signed a full confession in Butler County naming you as our chief operative. The Pentagon doesn't just have an arrest warrant for you. They’ve already authorized lethal termination."

Before I could process his words, the satellite terminal on the table chimed with a piercing red alert tone.

The screen lit up with a live feed from the *Farragut’s* radar interface, forwarded via a secure naval satellite relay.

A voice crackled over my personal radio earpiece—Martinez, his tone frantic and breathless:

"Skipper! We have two inbound fast-movers on radar! Unidentified tactical aircraft closing from the coast at Mach 2! They aren't answering fleet identification codes—and their targeting radars just painted the *Farragut*!"

Sterling looked at me, his smile widening into a terrifying grin. "Checkmate, Commander."
