Chapter 65 - The Secret in the Vault

The violent acceleration slammed us into our seats. Outside the titanium viewport, the dark ocean became a blur of phosphorescent green and rushing bubbles.
A high-explosive torpedo from the *Blackfish* grazed the outer armor plating of our starboard engine casing. The resulting explosion ripped through the water with such titanic force that the *Leviathan* rolled sixty degrees to port, throwing alarms across every subsystem. Sparks rained down from the ceiling conduits, and a smell of ozone and burning insulation filled our lungs.
"Auxiliary power holding at forty percent!" Jackson reported, his teeth clenched as he fought to maintain his footing while securing his grip on the prisoners. "We slipped beneath their primary firing arc, Captain! But they're turning hard. They'll have a rear firing solution in ninety seconds."
I locked the manual helm in a steep descent toward the Mariana-like trench cutting across the ocean floor—an underwater canyon known as the Devil’s Trench, where the sheer volcanic walls created an acoustic dead zone that could blind any active sonar array.
While the automated systems struggled to keep our hull intact against the crushing hydrostatic pressure of thirty-two hundred feet, I pulled out my tactical datapad, connected the cryogenic drive, and initiated a hardwired decryption sequence.
The screen flickered. A classified dossier from the Department of Defense, dated June 14, 1994, materialized before my eyes.
On the screen was a photograph of a woman whose face was the mirror image of my own—sharp jawline, piercing dark eyes, and a steady, uncompromising gaze.
*Dr. Sarah Cross. Lead Naval Cryptanalyst, Dayton Signal Facility.*
Below her picture was an operational summary marked with blood-red redactions:
*Subject uncovered systemic diversion of black-budget funds into private accounts held by Captain Richard Vance and civilian contractor Arthur Sterling. Subject refused hush money and prepared formal whistleblower filing to the Armed Services Committee. Neutralization ordered by R. Vance under cover of an off-base vehicular accident. Infant child transferred to Arthur and Martha Sterling for indefinite psychological suppression and continuous surveillance.*
The words burned into my retinas like acid.
Arthur and Martha hadn't just neglected me. They hadn't just favored Kevin while treating me like an uninvited stray. They had been paid a monthly stipend from a black-budget slush fund to systematically crush my spirit, to make sure I never looked into my own past, to ensure that the daughter of Sarah Cross died an anonymous, broken failure.
And Vance... Vance had watched my career from the shadows. When I stubbornly clawed my way into the Naval Academy despite my family’s sabotage, he hadn't stepped in out of guilt or admiration. He had realized that sooner or later, I would stumble upon the truth.

His promotion of me, his grand speech at the ceremony—it was all designed to keep me on a short, visible leash.
"You see it now, don't you?" Martha croaked from the corner of the deck, dragging herself upright against a ruptured hydraulic pipe. "He didn't save you from us, Eleanor. He was protecting himself from you."
