Chapter 28 - The Triumphant Return

Two months after the interception, the *USS James Farragut* sailed into the deep-water harbor of Naval Station Norfolk under a clear, brilliant azure sky. Tugboats sprayed massive arches of celebratory water into the air, and brass bands played triumphantly from the pier.

Lining the docks were thousands of sailors, naval dignitaries, and family members waving banners and American flags. The crew stood at attention along the lifelines in their crisp dress whites, pride radiating from every single deck division. We had intercepted an existential threat, dismantled a major foreign intelligence smuggling ring, and brought every single sailor home without a single scratch.

As the gangway was lowered, the chief of the boat’s whistle sounded over the harbor: *USS James Farragut, arriving!*

I walked down the brow, saluting the national colors at the quarterdeck before stepping onto the pier.

Waiting at the foot of the gangway, flanked by the Secretary of the Navy and an honor guard of master chiefs, stood Rear Admiral Harrison Vance. He stepped forward, his uniform immaculate, medals gleaming brilliantly in the afternoon sun.

"Commander Eleanor Whitaker," Admiral Vance announced, his deep voice carrying over the silent gathering on the pier. "By direction of the President of the United States and the Chief of Naval Operations, you are hereby awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for extraordinary heroism and operational brilliance in the defense of this nation."

The crowd erupted into thunderous, deafening applause as Admiral Vance pinned the prestigious medal onto my left breast.

He leaned in close, offering a firm, paternal handshake that carried none of the superficial coldness of my biological family. "You carried the weight of the Whitaker name on your back, Eleanor. Today, you redefined what that name means forever."

"Thank you, Admiral," I whispered back, my eyes finally shining with genuine tears of triumph. "I served my crew. I served my country."
