Chapter 19 - The High-Risk Directive
By day seven of the sea trials, the Vanguard had transitioned from basic certification drills to deep-water strike readiness testing three hundred miles off the Eastern Seaboard. The weather had turned treacherous; heavy gray swells slammed against the bow, sending spray sheeting across the forward missile decks.
Just past midnight, the secure red phone at the Tactical Action Officer station began to chime with a high-priority tone.
I lifted the handset immediately. "TAO, Lieutenant Commander Whitaker."
"Commander, this is Fleet Operations Command Center, Norfolk," a voice spoke with grim urgency over the encrypted circuit. "Authenticate code Alpha-Tango-Seven."
I verified the daily encryption code from my tactical binder. "Authenticated. Go ahead, Fleet."
"Commander, your sea trials are terminated effective immediately. The *Vanguard* is being redirected under classified operational directive Operation Night Watch."
The room seemed to freeze around me as the watchstanders detected the sudden shift in my voice.
"Copy, Fleet. What are our tasking parameters?"
"Six hours ago, an unflagged deep-sea research and surveillance vessel went dark approximately one hundred and fifty miles east of your current position. Intelligence indicates the vessel was operating an unauthorized subsurface acoustic tapping array near transatlantic critical communications cables. Simultaneously, a foreign nuclear submarine was tracked breaking away from an Arctic patrol sector, moving south at flank speed toward that exact quadrant."
The officer on the phone paused, letting the strategic stakes sink in.

"Fleet Forces Commander has designated USS *Vanguard* as the forward on-scene commander. You are authorized to intercept, shadow, and neutralize any intelligence-gathering operations threatening sovereign infrastructure. Brief your Captain immediately. Godspeed."
I hung up the phone and turned to face the CIC watch floor. The time for rehearsals was over. We were stepping directly into the crosshairs of an unfolding international crisis.
