Chapter 44 - The Paper Trail of Dayton

Within two hours, the cryptologic technicians aboard the *Farragut* had unlocked the primary partitions of Sterling’s drive. The glow of the bridge monitors painted Martinez’s face in blue hues as file after file decrypted on the secure terminal.

"Captain... this is sickening," Martinez murmured, scrolling through rows of financial ledgers, encrypted emails, and procurement serial numbers. "Your father didn't just fabricate a confession. He’s been receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in offshore shell deposits under the label of 'Whitaker Advanced Fabrication.' Every time you received a commendation, a corresponding transfer was made to suppress your personnel files."

"Show me the latest document," I said, leaning over his shoulder.

Martinez pulled up a scanned PDF stamped with the seal of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, cross-signed by a military liaison.

"Here it is, Skipper. Arthur Whitaker’s sworn statement. He claims you funneled military navigation software to overseas buyers through his machine shop. He claims he only discovered it last week when Kevin found the drives hidden in his office. He played the heartbroken father, swearing he had to turn in his own daughter out of patriotic duty."

A bitter, quiet laugh escaped my lips. Patriotic duty. Arthur Whitaker hadn't possessed a single shred of patriotism in his entire miserable existence. He had spent his life belittling my choices, calling my service ridiculous, mocking every promotion as a fluke or an undeserved favor. And when the walls began closing in on his own illicit greed, his immediate instinct was to offer up his daughter as a sacrificial lamb to save his golden boy, Kevin.

"Look at the timestamp on the digital certificate, Captain," Martinez pointed out, tapping the screen. "The notary seal predates the alleged discovery by three months. The signature was backdated using a stolen federal key."

"Meaning Arthur signed the confession long before he even claimed to have found the evidence," I noted, my mind working with absolute tactical clarity. "He was handed a script by Vice Admiral Ross, and he read his lines like a dutiful puppet."

"It gets worse," Martinez added grimly. "Vice Admiral Ross just issued an all-fleet broadcast declaring the *Farragut* compromised by foreign operatives. He has ordered Atlantic Fleet units to intercept us and board with extreme prejudice."

I turned away from the terminal and looked out through the reinforced bridge windows at the black, churning sea. The storm had cleared, revealing the cold brilliance of the stars.

"They think they can corner us out here in the dark," I said quietly. "They forgot that this ship was built to operate in total silence. Martinez, set course for Norfolk. We aren't running away. We're heading straight for the lion's den."
