Chapter 53 - The Matriarch's Ledger

The emergency radio on my bridge wing crackled to life, tied directly into the bridge’s exterior hailing system.

"You really believe you earned those four stripes, Eleanor?" Martha’s voice echoed across the churning strip of water separating our ships. "You think Vance protected you out of sentimentality? Out of respect for your tactical brilliance?"

I leaned over the bridge wing coaming, gripping the heavy steel rail, my eyes locked on the woman who had raised me in a home built entirely on deceit. "I earned every stripe with sweat, blood, and duty, Martha. Something you clearly traded away decades ago."

"Duty?" She chuckled, a sound that cut colder than the Atlantic wind. "You were an experiment, Eleanor! When I walked away from the Office of Naval Intelligence thirty years ago to build the Consortium, Vance and his little circle of loyalist dogs needed a hostage. They placed Arthur—a weak, compliant bureaucratic auditor—to watch me. And when you were born, they thought your existence would anchor me to a quiet suburban lawn in Ohio!"

My chest tightened, but I kept my posture ramrod straight. "Arthur was your handler?"

"Arthur was a pathetic sheep," she sneered, her voice carrying an edge of visceral contempt. "Terrified of his own shadow. That’s why we broke you down every single day at that dining table. We belittled your ambitions, ridiculed your grades, praised Kevin’s worthless little track trophies, all to ensure you would never look upward. We wanted you soft. Compliant. Broken enough that you’d never dream of joining the fleet. Because if you joined the fleet, Vance would have an operational lever against me!"

The crew on the bridge fell dead silent. Martinez, Chen, the lookouts—all of them listened as thirty years of my personal misery was laid bare, revealing that my entire childhood had been an operational battlefield.

"But you failed, didn't you?" I shouted back, stepping forward so the spotlights caught my captain's insignia, glinting sharp and silver against my dark collar. "You tried to crush my spine, Martha, but all you did was forge it into iron! I joined without your permission. I rose without your blessing. And now I stand on the deck of a guided missile destroyer, looking down at a traitor!"

Martha’s face hardened across the water. The mocking smile vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating glare of an apex predator cornered by its own bloodline.

"Then you leave me no choice, Captain Vance-pupil," she said coldly. "Open the forward missile tubes. Let’s see if your iron can withstand the fleet I built while you were playing soldier."
