Chapter 60 - The Trigger in the Abyss

The tension in the command sanctum stretched until it felt like a steel wire ready to snap. The only sound was the soft, terrifying hum of the quantum reactor beneath our feet, cycling in rhythm with the tactical heart-rate monitor strapped to my wrist.

Martha stared down the barrel of my weapon. Her jaw worked silently, the predatory arrogance struggling against the brutal mathematical reality of her situation.

"You think you’ve won, Eleanor?" she murmured, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper. "You think Vance is the noble protector of the Republic? Did he tell you why I left the Navy thirty years ago? Did he tell you what project was running in Dayton before you were born?"

"Quiet," I warned, pressing the barrel closer. "Kevin, hands on your head! Jackson, cuff him!"

Jackson surged forward, his heavy boots clattering against the deck plates as he grabbed Kevin by the collar, slamming him onto the metal grate and wrenching his arms behind his back. Kevin screamed in outrage, but Jackson’s knee pinned him flat.

"Tell her, Vance!" Martha suddenly shouted toward the ceiling, looking directly into the primary surveillance array that remained linked to the Pentagon. "Tell her what you did to her real mother!"

My breath seized in my lungs. My finger on the trigger stiffened.

"What did you say?" I asked, the world narrowing to a pinprick.

Martha smiled—a bloody, triumphant smile of pure malice. "You were never my daughter, Eleanor. You were a project asset recovered from an off-books black site. Arthur and I weren't your parents. We were your wardens. And Vance... Vance was the man who ordered your mother executed."

Before the words could fully settle into my consciousness, a massive klaxon blared through the leviathan.

"Warning," an automated synthetic voice chimed from the central console. "External torpedo lock detected. Multiple incoming high-speed underwater contacts, bearing zero-four-zero."

The main tactical holographic screen lit up in blinding yellow. A third fleet had entered the battle space. Unmarked. Unidentified. Emerging from the deep trench behind us at sixty knots.

And across all internal speakers, Admiral Vance’s voice cut through the comms—not from the Pentagon bunker, but from the flagship of the incoming strike group:

*"Stand down, Captain Eleanor. Secure the target... and prepare to surrender your command."*
