Chapter 50 - The Ghost Submarine

One week later, the *Farragut* was back underway in the deep waters off the North Carolina shelf. The storm of publicity had settled; the Pentagon had cleared our record completely, and a formal commendation was already being drafted for the ship's crew.

I stood on the bridge during the mid-watch, watching the green sweep of the primary radar display. The ocean was black, undisturbed, stretching endlessly into the horizon.

Martinez walked up beside me, handing me a freshly printed intelligence dossier stamped with the highest level of red classification: *EYES ONLY - COMMANDING OFFICER*.

"What is this, XO?" I asked, flipping open the folder.

"Admiral Vance sent it via the ultra-high-frequency courier channel ten minutes ago, Skipper," Martinez whispered, his face unusually pale. "It wasn't found on Ross's servers. It was pulled from an encrypted dead-drop discovered inside the Pentagon's deepest classified vault."

I glanced down at the first page. My breath caught in my throat.

The dossier didn't mention Ross. It didn't mention Arthur or Kevin. It was a file dating back thirty-five years—ten years before I was even born—bearing my mother's maiden name and a series of covert naval intelligence clearances that should have been impossible for a suburban housewife from Ohio.

"Arthur didn't initiate the contact with Vice Admiral Ross," I read aloud, my voice barely a whisper against the hum of the bridge equipment. "Arthur was a cutout... placed to monitor *her*."

Before I could turn to the next page, the bridge plunged into darkness.

The red emergency battle lights flared instantly to life. The acoustic tactical display let out a deafening, continuous squeal as the underwater hydrophones detected an immense, impossible sound signature rising from the abyss directly beneath our keel.

"Captain!" the sonar technician screamed, ripping off his headphones as feedback tore through the console. "Massive underwater contact! It's not a known class—it's five times the size of an Ohio-class ballistic submarine, rising at forty knots directly underneath us!"

The entire ship lurched violently as a massive magnetic pulse surged through the hull, knocking out secondary radar screens and freezing our steering gear.

On the secure communications console, a green light flickered to life—an incoming transmission bypassing all ship firewalls, originating directly from the unidentified leviathan rising beneath the waves.

A voice, distorted by oceanic static but chillingly, unmistakably feminine, crackled over the ship's internal speakers:

*"Eleanor, darling... you really should have stayed in Dayton."*
