Chapter 17 - The Navy’s Shield

The silence that followed Kevin's petulant complaint was deafening. The sailors on watch exchanged glances of utter disbelief and mounting contempt for the two men standing on the civilian side of the glass.

Before I could speak, heavy combat boots clicked against the linoleum. Master Chief Vance strode into the processing room, his imposing six-foot-three frame casting a shadow over Kevin. Flanking him was Lieutenant Commander Reynolds, the Base Security Officer.

"Is there an issue here, Commander Whitaker?" Master Chief Vance asked, his voice a low rumble of thunder, fixing Richard with a predatory glare that made the older man instinctively step back a half-pace.

"None that we cannot resolve under standard naval regulation, Master Chief," I answered calmly.

I turned back to Richard. My eyes were steady, stripped bare of any residual pain, fear, or resentment. He was looking at a complete stranger—an officer forged by trials he could never fathom.

"Listen to me very carefully, Richard," I said, every word clipped and distinct. "You do not own me. You never did. The United States Navy gave me the dignity, the purpose, and the family that you were too broken and selfish to provide. I owe you nothing. Not an explanation, not a dime, and certainly not an apology."

Richard's hands trembled with fury. "I am your father! You wouldn't be breathing if not for me!"

"A biological accident does not make you a father," I replied coolly. "And if you step foot on this installation again, or attempt to contact my command, Lieutenant Commander Reynolds here will file federal harassment charges and have you barred from every military property in the United States."

Reynolds stepped forward, resting a hand on his duty belt. "Sir, your visitor pass is revoked. You have two minutes to return to your vehicle and exit the base perimeter, or my team will take you into federal custody."

Richard looked at the armed guards, then at the towering Master Chief, and finally back at me. For the first time in his life, he realized the brutal truth: his power was an illusion, completely dead, dissolved into nothingness against the unbreakable wall of my new reality. Without another word, he spun around and dragged a humiliated Kevin out the glass doors.
