Chapter 73 - The Silent Ghost

The conversion was brutal. One by one, the auxiliary life support systems cut out, plunging the crew into suffocating stillness. The humming air scrubbers ceased, leaving only the stale taste of recycled oxygen and the sharp tang of burnt copper. Condensation began to freeze along the bulkheads as the ambient temperature plummeted toward freezing.

Yet, as the quantum drive tapped into the dormant superconducting coils lining the *Leviathan’s* outer skin, the miracle occurred. The magnetic drive engaged without the turn of a single screw. No cavitation. No mechanical clatter. The submarine became a phantom, sliding through the cold thermal layers of the Atlantic like a sliver of dark ice.

On the passive sonar screen, the enormous acoustic footprint of the *Dauntless* loomed like a leviathan in the mist. Vance had brought the carrier group to a full stop, holding position over our presumed grave to deploy automated salvage probes to recover the drive. He was arrogant. He assumed that superior firepower and four stars granted him total mastery over the ocean.

"He’s launching an unmanned recovery drone," Chen reported in a whisper that barely stirred the freezing air. "Target depth set to nine hundred feet."

"Good," I murmured, staring at the sonar grid. "He thinks he’s reaching into a tomb."

I gripped the manual rudder controls with my good right hand. "Bring us up along his blind spot, five knots, angled forty-five degrees under his starboard screw. Match his hull's natural resonant frequency."

The submarine rose silently through the thermocline. Through the forward optical periscope, the murky black water gave way to the massive, barnacle-encrusted keel of the *Dauntless*, suspended like an inverted mountain directly above us. It was suicide to bring two massive hulls within thirty yards of each other in open water, but suicidal risks were the only currency I had left.

"Hold position directly in his hydro-acoustic shadow," I ordered. "If his sonar operators blink, they’ll mistake our magnetic signature for their own keel corrosion."

"We're directly under their combat information center, Captain," Miller said softly. "What now?"

"Now," I replied, opening the encrypted command channel directly into the drive’s internal transmitter, "we tap the wire."
