Chapter 72 - Beneath the Keel

The ocean does not care about rank, treason, or family ledgers. At four hundred feet beneath the surface, the sea is an indifferent predator waiting for a single microscopic flaw in the steel. Red battle lanterns flickered along the flooded companionway of the lower deck, casting jagged reflections across the oily black water rising around my knees.

I pulled myself along the overhead conduit lines, ignoring the searing agony in my dislocated left arm. Every seal in the third compartment had buckled under the detonation, but the structural bulkhead held. Chief Miller and four surviving junior technicians were huddled around the manual distribution manifold, soaked in hydraulic fluid and brine.

"Report!" I barked, my voice cutting through the hiss of escaping high-pressure air.

Miller wiped a streak of grease and blood from his forehead, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Forward trim tanks took the brunt of the kinetic blast, Captain. The automated scuttle program shorted out when the secondary sea valves flooded. We didn't blow, but we’re dead in the water. Negative buoyancy. We’re passing six hundred feet and dropping thirty feet a second."

"And the *Dauntless*?"

"Right above us, ma'am," Petty Officer Chen whispered, her eyes wide with terror as she pointed a trembling hand toward the passive sonar display. "She's pinging with active high-frequency sonar. Vance isn't looking for survivors. He’s mapping the debris field to confirm the kill."

A rhythmic, sharp *ping* struck the outer hull, vibrating through the cold titanium plating like a funeral hammer. Vance was lingering directly overhead, waiting for the underwater implosion that would seal his legacy and silence the last witness to the Dayton conspiracy.

"Let him listen," I said, leaning hard against the control console as I unlocked the titanium case strapped to my chest. The quantum drive within pulsed with an ethereal, rhythmic sapphire light, entirely untouched by the sea. "He thinks the *Leviathan* is a mechanical relic. He forgot that my mother designed its power routing. Miller, cut the diesel auxiliary lines. Divert all remaining battery reserves directly into the quantum housing's primary induction coil."

Miller stared at me in disbelief. "Ma'am, that will burn out our life support in twenty minutes."

"Twenty minutes is nineteen minutes more than Vance thinks we have," I countered, locking eyes with him. "Prepare to engage silent crawl on the magnetic drive. We aren't going down with this ghost. We're getting behind him."
