Chapter 16 - The Gate Confrontation

The visitor center at Gate 2 was a secure brick facility equipped with bullet-resistant glass, automated turnstiles, and armed Master-at-Arms personnel standing vigilant watch.

When I stepped through the secure personnel entrance, the atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. Several junior sailors immediately snapped to attention, their salutes crisp and unwavering.

Across the waiting area, standing by the visitor counter, was my father and my brother Kevin.

Richard looked older, his hair thinning and disheveled, dressed in an ill-fitting sports jacket that smelled faintly of stale tobacco. Kevin stood beside him, slouching in stained jeans and an oversized hoodie, nervously tapping his foot while staring at the armed guards with resentful defiance.

"Clara!" my father barked loudly, stepping toward the security barrier as if he were walking across his own front porch. "Tell these rent-a-cops to open the gate right now! We drove nine hours through the night to deal with this nonsense!"

I stopped five paces away from the glass partition, my hands clasped loosely behind my back, my posture flawless. I did not raise my voice. I did not flinch.

"Mr. Whitaker," I stated, the address formal, cold, and entirely devoid of filial affection. "You are standing on a restricted United States naval installation. You do not shout at my sailors, and you do not make demands of personnel on duty."

Richard's face contorted into the familiar snarl of rage he had used my entire life to force my submission. "Don't you take that tone with me, young lady! You think because you're wearing that ridiculous costume and got some woman in a uniform to blow smoke up your rear, you can ignore your family? You owe Kevin two thousand dollars for that garage door, and you're going to write a public retraction to the Dayton paper clearing my name!"

Kevin scoffed, crossing his arms. "Yeah, Clara. Dad lost two major business accounts this week because of your little viral video stunt. You ruined our reputation back home!"
