Chapter 61 - The Admiral's Ultimatum

The bridge of the leviathan fell into a suffocating, unnatural silence, punctuated only by the rhythmic, crimson strobing of the proximity alarms. The words spoken by Admiral Vance through the secure military band hung in the humid, pressurized air like poison gas.

"Stand down, Captain Eleanor. Secure the target... and prepare to surrender your command."

I held my service sidearm leveled squarely between Martha’s eyes, but my hands—hands that had steered guided-missile destroyers through category-five hurricanes and naval barrages—trembled with an involuntary shudder. Every neuron in my brain felt fried, caught between Martha’s grotesque confession and Vance’s chilling directive.

"Surrender my command?" I whispered into the fleet-wide tactical comms, my voice cracking slightly before steeling into iron. "Admiral Vance, this is Captain Eleanor. We have secured the rogue vessel's command bridge. Suspects Kevin and Martha are under armed restraint. We are in compliance with maritime law and Department of the Navy direct orders. Clarify your transmission immediately."

On the primary holotank, the underwater telemetry updated with horrifying rapidity. The incoming wolfpack was not standard Navy salvage or support vessels. They were four Virginia-class fast-attack submarines, moving in silent-running formation, accompanied by a massive, unmarked dual-hull command platform cruising beneath the thermocline. They had fired acoustic suppressors, blinding our sensors to anything except their overwhelming physical presence.

"There is nothing to clarify, Captain," Vance’s voice returned. It lacked the fatherly warmth that had steadied me on the podium in Norfolk, the gentle resonance that had shattered my family’s illusions in the banquet hall. Now, it was stripped down to the cold, unyielding alloy of high-stakes military realpolitik. "The theater has been reclassified under Directive Zero. The Dayton facility, the offshore shell accounts, and the asset known as Martha Vance-Sterling are matters of National Security Council jurisdiction. You have executed your operational duty admirably. Now step away from the terminal and open the docking hatch."

Martha began to laugh. It started as a wet, ragged cough in her throat and escalated into a hysterical cackle that bounced off the polished titanium bulkheads.

"I told you, Eleanor!" she shrieked, spitting blood onto the deck. "He gave you that fourth stripe to put you in the crosshairs! He needed someone expendable who could dig into our network without raising red flags in Congress. He made you his blunt instrument to clean up the blood on his own hands!"

"Shut her up, Jackson," I ordered, my teeth grinding so hard my jaw ached.

Jackson stepped forward and jammed the muzzle of his carbine against the base of Kevin’s neck, keeping Kevin pinned to the deck, but his eyes darted to me with unmistakable panic. "Ma'am... sonar shows those attack subs just opened their outer tube doors. They're painting our hull with active target-acquisition sonars. They aren't here to relieve us. They're boxing us in."
