Chapter 27 - The Broken Mother

Three weeks had passed since the raid in Oakwood. The story had exploded across every national news network. *Defense Subcontractor Exposed in Billion-Dollar Black Market Smuggling Ring; Local Father and Son Face Life Sentences.* The family home had been seized under asset forfeiture laws; Evelyn had been forced to move into a tiny, dilapidated rental apartment on the outskirts of Dayton.
Her phone had not rung once with messages of support. The country club friends had deleted her number. The church committee had quietly asked her not to attend Sunday services.
With shaking hands, Evelyn dialed the private, unlisted satellite number that had been given to her by the naval family liaison officer.
Aboard the *USS James Farragut*, cutting through the northern Atlantic waters, my desk terminal rang. I looked at the caller ID, waited through three steady chimes, and pressed the speakerphone button.
"Commander Whitaker," I answered, my tone neutral and guarded.
"Eleanor... baby, is that you?" Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker, frail, trembling, and utterly broken. "Eleanor, please... you have to call the prosecutor. They took the house, Eleanor. They took everything. Kevin... Kevin is crying in his cell every night. He’s your little brother! You have the Admiral’s ear! Just tell them Kevin was misled! Tell them Richard was under pressure!"
I leaned back in my leather chair, staring at the small framed photograph of my commissioning day—the day my parents refused to attend because they were busy buying Kevin a sports car.
"Mother," I said, the word cold and unfamiliar on my tongue. "For twelve years, you told everyone in Ohio that my service was ridiculous. You told me I was a failure because I didn't work for a corporate contractor like Kevin. You asked why I couldn't be more like him."
"I was wrong, Eleanor! I admit it! Please, forgive us!" she wailed through the line.
"I am an officer of the United States Navy," I continued, voice steady as steel. "I do not interfere with the rule of law. Kevin and father made their choices. They chose greed, and they chose betrayal. The Navy gave me honor, respect, and a family that actually understands the meaning of loyalty. You will never ask me to sacrifice my integrity for your crimes again."
"Eleanor, wait! Don't hang up! Eleanor—!"

I clicked the disconnect button. The room fell into total, peaceful silence.
