Chapter 47 - The Confrontation on Pier 12

The tension on the pier was suffocating. The cold wind whipped off the bay, carrying the sharp scent of diesel and sea salt. Ross stood frozen, his hand still half-raised, as Admiral Vance walked past the security line without sparing him so much as a glance.

"Vance! What is the meaning of this disruption?" Ross demanded, trying to salvage his commanding veneer. "This woman is an unauthorized combatant who fired upon naval assets! She belongs in irons!"

"The only person belonging in irons, Ross, is standing in your shoes," Vance answered calmly, stopping five feet from the Vice Admiral. He gestured toward Martinez, who stepped forward and opened the secure briefcase, presenting a digital tablet displaying live decrypted transmissions.

"Forty minutes ago, the Inspector General verified the cryptographic key on your nephew’s private terminal," Vance said, his voice loud enough to carry across the entire pier. "The order to deploy two strike fighters against the *Farragut* came directly from your personal office terminal at the Pentagon. You bypassed the chain of command, falsified mission logs, and committed an act of war against your own flag."

Ross stumbled backward a half-step, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson. "That’s an absurd fabrication! A digital spoof created by her team to cover their own treason!"

"And what about this?" I said, stepping down the last rungs of the gangway and stopping directly in front of Arthur Whitaker.

My father cowered, his shoulders hunching as he looked up at me. His arrogance from Dayton, his smirks at the dinner table, his cruel laughter when I told him I had enlisted—all of it had melted into pathetic, spineless terror.

"Eleanor..." Arthur stammered, his teeth chattering against the cold. "Eleanor, baby, listen to me... they made me do it. They said they'd take the machine shop. They said Kevin would go to prison if I didn't sign the papers..."

"You sold me out twenty years ago, Arthur," I said, my voice quiet, cutting, and merciless. "You walked into Ross’s office before I even had my first set of orders because you couldn't stomach the thought of a daughter outdoing your son. You were never a father. You were just a petty, jealous parasite who thought blood gave you the right to destroy my life."

Kevin tried to step between us, his voice cracking. "Eleanor, please, we're your family! You can't let them arrest Dad! Look at him, he's old, he can't survive prison!"

"He should have thought about that before he tried to have me murdered at sea," I replied, turning my gaze to Kevin. "And you, Kevin? You enjoyed the money, didn't you? You liked driving that imported truck bought with defense kickbacks while calling my career ridiculous. Well, look at yourself now."

Two federal marshals stepped up, instantly snapping heavy steel handcuffs around Arthur’s frail wrists, followed by another pair locking Kevin’s hands behind his back.

"Federal marshals, take them," Vance commanded. "Arthur and Kevin Whitaker, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit treason, fraudulent procurement, and aiding in an unlawful strike against United States armed forces."

Arthur let out a pathetic wail, tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks as he was shoved toward the rear of a transport vehicle. "Eleanor! Help us! Tell them I'm your father! Tell them!"

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I watched them shove him into the cage like the criminal he had always been.
