Chapter 80 - The Dark Horizon

Twelve hours later, the morning sun broke over the horizon, painting the choppy waters of the Atlantic in hues of crimson and gold. The *Leviathan*, strapped securely between two deep-sea fleet tugs, was being towed toward the naval station at Norfolk under an escort of four guided-missile destroyers.

I sat on an aluminum crate on the forward deck of the *Dauntless*, my left arm immobilized in a heavy sling, wrapped in a dry navy greatcoat. The quantum drive was locked securely inside a diplomatic pouch resting beside my boots, guarded by two silent, stone-faced Marines who had orders signed directly by the President of the United States.

Vance was locked in the brig five decks below, facing charges of treason, conspiracy, murder, and high maritime crimes that would ensure he spent the remainder of his days in a federal penitentiary without parole. In Dayton, federal agents were dismantling the Holloway estate piece by piece, seizing bank accounts, unearthing hidden vaults, and arresting every remaining operative who had profited off the blood of sailors.

My past had been burned to the ground. The family that called my ambition ridiculous was gone, eradicated by their own greed.

Miller walked up to the railing, handing me a paper cup of steaming black coffee. "Looks like blue skies all the way to Virginia, Captain. We made it."

I took a sip of the bitter coffee, watching the gray coastline begin to form on the distant horizon. "We made it through Vance's storm, Chief. But we aren't out of the water yet."

Miller frowned, following my gaze. "What do you mean, ma'am? Vance is finished. The syndicate is dead."

I picked up the secure satellite tablet resting on my knee. The screen showed an urgent, encrypted text message that had just bypassed the primary military firewall, originating from a classified terminal in Geneva, Switzerland.

It contained no greeting, no signature, and no official military seal. There were only two lines of glowing text:

*Vance was only the quartermaster, Eleanor.*

*The architects of Dayton are waiting for you at Pier 4.*

May you like

Before I could lock the screen, the ship's general quarters klaxon wailed to life across the carrier deck, and a lookout screamed through the deck horn:

"Unidentified submarine contact breaking surface inside the harbor channel! Bearing dead ahead!"
