Chapter 31 - The Lockdown Breached

The pitch-black darkness of my command office swallowed me whole, but my mind did not freeze. Adrenaline surged through my veins, sharpening every instinct drilled into me over a decade of naval service. The heavy steel door was magnetically sealed from the exterior security console, and the dead silence in the hallway beyond was far more ominous than an alarm. Vance’s final word echoed in my skull like an artillery blast: *Run.*

I dropped to one knee beneath the heavy mahogany desk. If hostile operatives had penetrated naval headquarters and manipulated the building’s automated security protocols, they would be outside my door within seconds. Reaching under the reinforced kneehole of the desk, my fingers found the hidden mechanical release—a manual fire-override lever installed in all Tier-1 command suites. I yanked it hard toward me.

With a harsh mechanical click, the magnetic seal surrendered. I slid open my bottom desk drawer, drawing my service-issue Sig Sauer P229 and chambering a round in total silence. I didn't reach for the doorknob immediately. Instead, I pressed my ear against the cold metal panel, listening intently to the corridor.

Footsteps. Two men, moving with the measured, disciplined pace of seasoned tactical contractors. Their boots were rubber-soled, barely scuffing the polished floor, but their whispers betrayed them.

"Confirm target in Suite 402," one rasped into a shoulder radio. "Command wants the hard drives stripped and Whitaker detained under Special Directive 9. Non-lethal if possible, lethal if she resists."

"Understood. Preparing thermite charge for the lock."

They were going to breach and take me before I could transmit what I knew. I knew the floor plan far better than any hired mercenary. To my left, behind the ornamental bookshelf holding my past commendations and naval history volumes, lay the maintenance access conduit leading directly down to the primary cooling ducts above the hangar bay.

I stepped back silently into the dark, pulled the bookshelf's hidden pivot hinge, and squeezed into the narrow, unlit shaft just as a blinding flash and a deafening hiss tore through my office door. Smoke and molten metal sprayed across the room where I had stood only heartbeats before.

I pulled the panel shut behind me, wedging my tactical pen into the track to jam it from the inside. Breathing through my teeth, I navigated the iron service ladder into the guts of the Norfolk base, heading for the only sanctuary I had left: the flight deck and berths of the USS *Farragut*.
