Chapter 22 - Boarding the Ghost Ship

The ocean was an unforgiving obsidian churn as our rigid-hull inflatable boat slammed through the swells toward the stricken rogue freighter. Rain lashed against our tactical visors, salt spray burning my lips. As the operational commander, I had refused to remain in the comfort of the bridge. The intelligence file bore my family’s fingerprints; whatever secrets were buried inside the steel belly of that vessel, I needed to see them with my own eyes.

Our tactical boarding team scaled the pilot ladders like shadows, assault rifles raised in tight, overlapping fields of fire. The deck of the freighter smelled of heavy bunker fuel, scorched metal, and raw panic. There was no resistance left. The crew—a ragtag assembly of mercenary mariners and foreign technical contractors—had already gathered on the main deck, hands zip-tied behind their backs under the vigilant guard of my armed petty officers.

"Bridge is secured, Commander!" Lieutenant Vance reported, stepping over tangled cabling on the wet deck. "Ship's captain is an offshore mercenary named Volkov. He was paid in cryptocurrency to transport specialized hardware out of North American waters without clearing customs."

"Take me to the primary cargo hold," I replied flatly.

Vance led me down a narrow, grease-stained companionway into Cargo Hold Two. The air down here was climate-controlled, unusually cold, and scented with industrial lubricant. Secured inside heavy-duty titanium freight containers were dozens of sealed wooden crates bearing federal logistics stencils.

I approached the nearest crate and pried the lid open with a tactical crowbar. Wood splintered under the leverage, revealing rows of military-grade micro-guidance controllers, radar-absorbent composite skin panels, and classified telemetry transmitters designed exclusively for next-generation defense drones.

Then my eyes caught the bright yellow shipping manifests taped to the inside of the lid.

Every crate bore an official dispatch label originating directly from the Dayton, Ohio manufacturing yard. And there, stamped in indelible blue ink right beside the federal export clearance seals, were two signatures:

*Logistics Release Authorized by: Richard Whitaker, Senior Logistics Director.*

*Assembly and Quality Verification by: Kevin Whitaker, Technical Lead.*

Beside me, Vance squinted at the paper, then looked at me, completely unaware of the knife twisting inside my chest. "Dayton Precision Aerospace... they're an approved Pentagon contractor, ma'am. Someone on the inside intentionally falsified these serial numbers to make them look like surplus scrap, then smuggled them onto this foreign transport."

"It wasn't just someone on the inside," I whispered, my voice dangerously steady as I ran a gloved finger over my father's familiar, rigid handwriting. "It was my family."
