Chapter 83 - The Pier of Traitors

The *Dauntless* was forced to nudge into Pier 4 under the watchful, mocking eye of the black submarine that sat stationary in the center of the turning basin. Its ballistic missile hatches remained flush with the deck, but everyone on our ship knew that the true weapon Sterling possessed was digital, invisible, and already buried deep within our military infrastructure.
As our heavy mooring hawsers were thrown and secured by trembling dockhands, the perimeter of Pier 4 presented a nightmare scenario. Instead of the standard contingent of Navy shore patrol and Master-at-Arms officers, the concrete expanse was ringed by black SUVs and armed contractors wearing unmarked tactical gear—private military security bearing corporate badges from Sterling Defense.
"Look at them," Miller whispered, his shotgun held low behind the lip of the forward bulwark. "They’re daring us to shoot. In our own home port!"
"Because they know the chain of command is currently paralyzed," I said, stepping back toward the diplomatic pouch resting on the steel deck. The two Marines guarding it remained motionless, their fingers resting lightly on the triggers of their rifles. "Sterling has friends in the Pentagon who are stalling the emergency authorization. If we wait for Washington to sort through the red tape, he’ll download the remaining decryption keys from that drive via short-range relay."
"Commander," Admiral Henderson’s voice echoed down the companionway as he walked out onto the weather deck, his uniform immaculate despite the grime of the long voyage. His gold stars caught the pale afternoon sun. His face was carved from granite. "I just spoke with the Chief of Naval Operations. The Joint Chiefs are in an emergency bunker. Sterling’s malware has locked out three regional commands. They are urging... compliance."
"Compliance is surrender, Admiral," I said flatly, facing him.
"They don't know who they're dealing with, Eleanor," Henderson said, his gray eyes burning into mine. "They think you're still the meek daughter from Oakwood who can be pressured into signing away her honor to save her family's reputation."
"I stopped being that daughter the moment you pinned these stripes to my shoulder, sir."
"Good," the Admiral said, reaching behind his back and pulling a small, heavy black case from his inner coat pocket. He didn't offer a traditional sidearm; he offered a hardened tactical military override device, keyed to his own personal authority. "Sterling built the front door to the automated defense network. But forty years ago, before Sterling bought his way into the Pentagon, I helped lay the physical fiber-optic cables beneath Pier 4. There is an analog terminal inside the harbor master’s bunker. If someone can bypass his digital blockade manually, the shore batteries will wake up."

"And shoot him point-blank," Miller grinned, a feral gleam returning to his eyes.
"Not just him," I said, looking out at the black submarine. "We take back the entire harbor."
